I like Scarecrow when you can't even tell what age or attractiveness level he is, like when he's in full costume and seems more of a creature than a man in a costume. That's the scariest shit ever. Like his brief appearance in Arkham Asylum (the comic, not the game) - I almost cried, it was so terrifying.

I tend to watch comic book movies once and then forget they exist when it comes to fandom. They're just not my thing.

Sometimes it's harder to avoid the movie bits of fandom, like with movie Joker, but it can still be done. Heath Ledger was a great Joker, but Mark Hamill will forever and always be THE Joker. (At least to me.)

I'm surprised so many people are fans of Heath Ledger's Joker. I mean, it was a good performance. But when people say it was close to the comic books or that it was the "true" Joker, it makes me wonder if they know anything about the comics at all. Heath's Joker is a realistic, gritty version of the Joker, but he's as far removed from the comics as Cillian Murphy's Scarecrow is.

As far as I'm concerned, Mark Hamill got it spot on. And Arkham Asylum/Arkham City allowed him to be as brutal and sadistic as he wanted to be, without the fear of scaring the child audience. Hell, he is basically the Joker from The Killing Joke. It's hard not to read that comic and hear Hamill's voice.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-23 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
well you can't spell Arkham without mARK HAMill

(Anonymous) 2011-10-23 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
lol, I never noticed that!

[identity profile] judo-creature.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
my mind was just legitimately blown.

I am seriously sitting here staring at the screen dumbfounded.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-23 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
lol don't be mindblown it doesn't make any sense. Should be the other way around which meh

[identity profile] judo-creature.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
don't be a douchebag this is awesome

(Anonymous) 2011-10-23 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
uh, that doesn't make any sense. It should be can't spell Mark Hamill without Arkham. Which isn't as cool
ext_81845: penelope, my art/character (homigod!)

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
Semantics semantics

The word ARKHAM is in Mark Hamill's name and you don't even have to rearrange any letters and that. Is fucking awesome.

[identity profile] endis-ni.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 02:44 pm (UTC)(link)
That's just genius!
ext_340502: (Scarecrow)

[identity profile] pengychan.livejournal.com 2011-10-22 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
This.
As much as I appreciated Nolan's Scarecrow, to me Scarecrow will always be the scrawny guy we get in Batman: TAS. That, or his "Year One" appearance, though they did beautify him at least a bit in that one, too.

[identity profile] dangerousdame.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
I can understand where you're coming from, but I don't think it's bad to get interested in a character partly because they're pretty. I had a crush on movie!Scarecrow, and after reading some of the comics he's in, unpretty!Scarecrow is also a favorite of mine.

[identity profile] micromyni.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
I do like the "brown hair, blue eyes" thing, but he needs to be thin, gangly, with a big nose and frown lines. Glasses would be nice too. CAT-verse Scarecrow is my current favorite, but TAS!Scarecrow will always have a special place in my heart. I prefer it when he keeps the costume on, though. You forget after a while that he's just a man.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-23 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
What's CAT-verse?

[identity profile] micromyni.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
A pretty popular fanfiction version of him. http://catverse.wikispaces.com/The+Scarecrow

(Anonymous) 2011-10-23 11:43 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, fanfiction. I don't really read fanfiction anymore, almost all the stories seem to involve pairing him up with some girl or the Riddler. Does that happen in this version?

Yeah, I hate what the Nolan!movies fandom has done to, well, practically every Batman villain.

[identity profile] dinerstate.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
Not only Nolan, but in Arkham Asylum (the game) he was super thin, often shirtless, and creepy. I don't remember if we saw his face there but I can see it contributing to the gussying up of Dr. Crane to pander to fandom.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-23 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
No, we never saw his face. Just incredible amounts of his chest. (And all I could wonder the whole time was if anyone was feeding him.)

[identity profile] allybally12345.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 09:19 am (UTC)(link)
I guess it depends on taste, but I don't think they were going for 'appealing' when they were designing Scarecrow for Arkham Asylum. He's pretty creepy looking, even if we ignore the mask for a moment.

Well, Cillian Murphy is pretty tall and skinny. I guess if you're a fan of the comic verse characters, it's occasionally hard to accept the film versions. Cillian was a perfect Scarecrow IMO, but I didn't have much of an attachment to the comic version plus I'm a big Cillian fan.

[identity profile] llrael.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 07:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh man my favourite villain ever I was just reading Scarecrow Tales on the train let me tell you my thoughts on Crazy Jonny Crane.

Er, I like him best in Scarecrow Year One. With the nail polish and the hobo gloves and the singing Bing Crosby and the being from Georgia. Get at me.

It's actually quite interesting to see how his appearance has evolved over the years. He starts off with black hair, 6ft and easily in his forties if not older, and gradually gets younger, shorter and more ginger, until in Year One he's almost blond.
Kinda interested to see if he turns up in the reboot. World need more Scarecrow.
