She only got offended in the movie. In the book, she had pretty much the same reaction you did.

This. The movies changed it so Hermione was the only person to be able to infodump because they wanted Ron to just be the funny sidekick, not the one with actual wizard knowledge... considering he's pure-blood and all.

The Ron part actually annoyed me more than the Hermione part.
I mean, I understand that you need to give out as much information as you can in movies so you might use Hermione that way, but why did Ron not get a single "wizarding-world-smart" line? Or did I just miss it? In the books, at least once a book there's a reference that Ron gets and the other two don't.

[identity profile] ladyyuna07.livejournal.com 2011-10-22 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
It annoyed me too. The only thing I know off the top of my head (because it was on HBO this morning) was the Beetle Bard book in movie 7.1.
Yes, Hermione's booksmart and would want to learn everything she could to assimilate into her new life, but Ron's the one who ACTUALLY has experienced it and knows it. Just one more thing that bothered me about the movies...

[identity profile] lejic.livejournal.com 2011-10-22 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah yeah, at least he got to keep the 'childhood bedtime story' knowledge. That is sort of a relief.

I think Ron's casual knowledge played a real part in the books as a 'mood setter.' That's one of the ways we knew that we were stepping into this whole new world with its own way of living.

[identity profile] raichu100.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
wow, I...actually forgot about the info part. In the book it was Ron who knew.

I think I like it that way better.

[identity profile] fivil.livejournal.com 2011-10-22 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, was this the bit where they took something Ron would logically know (the wizarding cultural context of what made the word such a strong slur) and made him vommit while Hermione gave his line?

I guess you could say she might've read about it in a book but still, that always annoyed me. Kloves. :|

[identity profile] damnated.livejournal.com 2011-10-22 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? I always had the feeling she'd gotten pretty upset at being called a mudblood (in both materials). Then again, it's been a very long time since I've re-read the books.

[identity profile] hells-hikari.livejournal.com 2011-10-22 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
In the book, she didn't know what the term meant. Of course, both she and Harry realised it was something terribly insulting, but they didn't know what it was. It was later explained in Hagrid's hut.

In the movie, Hermione was crying and explained to Harry what it meant.

[identity profile] eerised-da.livejournal.com 2011-10-22 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
The issue is that even if she knows the meaning and the insult behind it, crying over it doesn't make much sense because she doesn't have the experience to tell her this is offensive. Being told something is offensive is all well and good, but her lack of experience in the Wizarding world would leave her feeling kind of "meh" about the whole thing.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-23 08:09 am (UTC)(link)
nope

she didn't even know what it meant, ron had to explain it to both her and harry

[identity profile] microminiscrew.livejournal.com 2011-10-22 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Shit you're right, I didn't even remember that. Sigh. All this will do is remind of all the things the movies got wrong

[identity profile] robintheshrew.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
That's what I thought
