She only got offended in the movie. In the book, she had pretty much the same reaction you did.

[identity profile] ladyyuna07.livejournal.com 2011-10-22 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
This. The movies changed it so Hermione was the only person to be able to infodump because they wanted Ron to just be the funny sidekick, not the one with actual wizard knowledge... considering he's pure-blood and all.

Oh, was this the bit where they took something Ron would logically know (the wizarding cultural context of what made the word such a strong slur) and made him vommit while Hermione gave his line?

I guess you could say she might've read about it in a book but still, that always annoyed me. Kloves. :|

[identity profile] damnated.livejournal.com 2011-10-22 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? I always had the feeling she'd gotten pretty upset at being called a mudblood (in both materials). Then again, it's been a very long time since I've re-read the books.

Shit you're right, I didn't even remember that. Sigh. All this will do is remind of all the things the movies got wrong

[identity profile] robintheshrew.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
That's what I thought

(Anonymous) 2011-10-22 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
there is no believer more fervent than a convert. As an incomer and someone determined to prove herself, yeah she'd get more offended. It's like when a WASP-woman converts to Judaism, they are the ones that get shrieky at waitstaff for having no kosher options while the rest of the temple is ordering bacon sandwiches.

[identity profile] eerised-da.livejournal.com 2011-10-22 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think that holds true or everything though. Hermione is proud of her muggle parents. She's eager to soak up all the knowledge she can, but that would also imply that she knows the word before hand which she didn't and had the experience to give her the feelings, which she later does.

I also think that the example you give differs slightly in the experience and also assumes everyone responds the same.

And again, in canon, Hermione doesn't react, the movies just decided that she should.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-22 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
That's not a good comparison, though. Hermione is being insulted for something she can't control that relates to her background. It would be more like a convert to Judaism being called a Bible Basher. She may have never heard the term before, but in researching her new religion, she might have read about it.

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
Wait, wasn't Hermoine born a wizard? I was aware it was something she didn't have any control over, unlike converting to a religion which is all about choice.

I was under the impression that in the HP universe, sometimes wizards are just randomly born to muggle parents, that it's not something that's totally genetic. Is that not how it works?

Actually, wasn't it only Ron who was pissed? You know, because he's a wizard who had actually heard the term before. Leave it to the movies to take all of Ron's emotions and give them to Hermione, though... :\

[identity profile] lejic.livejournal.com 2011-10-22 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, he was the one who got angry.

[identity profile] eerised-da.livejournal.com 2011-10-22 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
The movies messed it up. In the books, Ron got angry along with the other people born to wizarding families, while Harry and Hermione were just very confused.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-22 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. That's why he tried to hex Malfoy and ended up vomiting slugs into a bucket in Hagrid's hut. Hermione and Harry had to be told what it meant.

[identity profile] lemon-m.livejournal.com 2011-10-22 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
She was pretty confused about it in the book, and Ron had to explain it to her (and Harry) while vomiting slugs after trying to defend her. I didn't remember she was the one who was offended in the movie, but now it's bugging me that they changed it.

[identity profile] eerised-da.livejournal.com 2011-10-22 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
It always bothered me that in the movie she not only knew what the word meant but also cried over it. It was not at all canon to the books, nor logical. She's a twelve year old girl who's never grown up with that kind of oppression and prejudice, and even if she'd read the term in a book somewhere, she wouldn't connect to it the same way someone born in that world would.

[identity profile] sumpta.livejournal.com 2011-10-22 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
This. In the books, she's pretty unconcerned even after Ron has explained the word, because it's just so meaningless and empty to her.

This is another side effect of Steve Kloves' annoying hard-on for Emma Watson/Hermione. ugh that man

(Anonymous) 2011-10-22 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
That's because the movie used her as a quick explanation for what a mudblood is. In the book, Ron has to describe it to her (this was kind of the beginning in the movies of Ron being portrayed as much stupider and more ignorant than he was in the books).

However, I thought it was supposed to be that she had read about it and knew about it because of that. You can certainly be offended by something you've never physically heard before that applies to you or your worldview.

[identity profile] sistermagpie.livejournal.com 2011-10-22 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
As others have said, the movie just makes no sense when she does that. In the book not only is she clueless the first time, but the word never upsets her. She's not insecure about having Muggle parents.

I think we can all agree that the word mudblood is basically set up so it would probably be about as offensive as shiksa in the real world. I often think I cringe more typing it than any Harry Potter character would, because I've been familiar with it since I was about eight, and they wouldn't even be conscious of its existence as a slur until mid to late teens.

Maybe it was the intent Draco had more than the actual word. I see your point though.

my thoughts exactly!

[identity profile] pendingprogress.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 04:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Argh, yes, THIS. I was rewatching that the other day and it made me get annoyed all over again. In the book it makes total sense. In the movie it's just like what? People do not do that, in general. I could understand maybe theoretically if she had been subject to a lot of prejudice before so it was like, "Well, I've not heard this word but it's just one more way to belittle me," and the feeling would be familiar, but, clearly that is not Hermione.
