there is no believer more fervent than a convert. As an incomer and someone determined to prove herself, yeah she'd get more offended. It's like when a WASP-woman converts to Judaism, they are the ones that get shrieky at waitstaff for having no kosher options while the rest of the temple is ordering bacon sandwiches.

I don't think that holds true or everything though. Hermione is proud of her muggle parents. She's eager to soak up all the knowledge she can, but that would also imply that she knows the word before hand which she didn't and had the experience to give her the feelings, which she later does.

I also think that the example you give differs slightly in the experience and also assumes everyone responds the same.

And again, in canon, Hermione doesn't react, the movies just decided that she should.

That's not a good comparison, though. Hermione is being insulted for something she can't control that relates to her background. It would be more like a convert to Judaism being called a Bible Basher. She may have never heard the term before, but in researching her new religion, she might have read about it.

Wait, wasn't Hermoine born a wizard? I was aware it was something she didn't have any control over, unlike converting to a religion which is all about choice.

I was under the impression that in the HP universe, sometimes wizards are just randomly born to muggle parents, that it's not something that's totally genetic. Is that not how it works?

Apparently it is genetic, it's just a recessive gene.

well no one is born Jewish either, its a culture that people opt into either through converting or being rased within so they don't realise there is another option. Jew is not a race in the sense black or asian is a race.

It's an imperfect analogy for an imperfect world. Hermione is a convert to wizard culture. She can also do magic. Doing magic is not a perquisite for being a part of wizard culture, having the ability to do magic does not mean an individual will invest themselves in wizard culture.

Many Jews consider it to be an ethnicity and Jewish people do have specific genes that can cause certain diseases that other ethnic groups don't get, like Tay-Sachs, etc.

It's not a race but I would consider it an ethnicity.
