Mmm yes, heaven forbid she can't identify with neither the Bella Swan-ish damsel-that's-always-but-not-really-in-distress stereotype nor the my-terrible-attitude-is-empowering ice-queen/man-with-breasts stereotype. Yes, how very whiny to want a character that's not some silly extreme but a well-developed character. I suggest you read some of the rest of this thread.
Really though, there is nothing wrong with what lykomancer said, nor with the way she said it, which leads me to believe you are personally ruffled.

Sort of. I don't view it as "man-with-breasts" as it's portrayed as being TOO dominant-- it becomes "I must be AGGRESSIVE and CUTTING and MEAN because others will perceive me as a WEAK WOMAN if I show even the slightest emotion that isn't ARROGANCE and HOSTILITY...but I really have a big soft core deep inside that I can't ever let anyone see because then they'll know I'm WEAK and won't take me seriously!" This character stereotype hinges around the fact that the character's a woman and so must be a horrendous person in order to prove she's not just some "silly girl". And frankly? I find that stereotype just as sexist and insulting as the Bella Swan type.

You know, I really hesitated a lot before deciding to reply, but I have to say, I know (or rather used to know) two women irl who fit the description perfectly. One of them is a gender studies teacher, the other was my thank goodness now ex-boss. In their mind they were this all-powerful alpha-female I-don't-take-no-shit-from-no-one superwomen, but in reality, except for those who they decided to like, they treated everyone like dirt. I'm not saying it's entirely the media's fault, although I know my ex-teacher is in love with these over-the-top dominant characters; but it's high time women are given strong and at the same time wise and/or compassionate role models.

See, I don't mind those characters. I don't think every female character has to be a role model.
