I think a lot of times the problem comes down to the fact that very few shows have more than two or three important, reoccurring female characters. Many shows only have one female character of note, which means they end up having to be WOMEN rather than just a woman.

The more writers incorporate women, and the more diverse women in stories become, the less any single female character has to be "perfect" because the less they represent all women.

That's how I see it, anyway.

Do you know, say what you will about Moffat, but I think Sherlock is doing a fairly good job at this. I really don't see what's wrong with Molly or Sally or any of them. Mrs Hudson puts up with Sherlock's crap about as much as you'd expect someone to (which is less than most people, considering she apparently keep raising his rent). So Sally hates him? We don't know the full story behind that, and he did air her dirty laundry at a crime scene. I'm pretty willing to bet that it wasn't the first time, either. I'd probably hate him too.


IDK. I do think it just comes down to this idea that female characters are 'supposed' to be a certain way, even when that in itself is detrimental to the case.



And, I have to admit, I'm excited as hell to see what they do with Irene Adler. I think, if anything, we can trust Gatiss to keep her from becoming some sort of super ninja cat burglar or whatever it was Ritchie did to her.
