Female characters really can't win when it comes to fandom. If they're strong and 'kick-ass', they're accused of being too masculine. If they're shy, people wish they'd gain a back-bone and stop being so pathetic. If they're smart, people accuse them of being smug know-it-alls. If they're they're not brilliant, people insist they're too dumb to live. They're too pretty/not pretty enough, too confident/too weak, too cold/too clingly, etc...

And by 'people', I mean fandom in general, not the OP or any particular commenter.

Basically, I feel like the television landscape is full of diverse and interesting female characters but they're all judged as lacking some basic requirement that makes a 'good' female character.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-22 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Nothing can please everyone, but everything can please someone. If a female character is strong, some people will love her for that while others call her a mary sue. Then when there's a female character who's weak, the people who didn't like the strong female character will like this one for being flawed, and the people who liked the strong female character won't like this one.

Of course, some people are hypocrites and can't be happy with anything.

yeah exactly
there's nothing wrong with a lot of the characters, it's these dumb feminists who sit on their fat (they call them "curvy") asses and actually look for shit that can be considered wrong with these chicks
then they blame other people for it looooolllll

[identity profile] kitty-wake.livejournal.com 2011-10-22 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh Christ almighty. Will you ever shut up? Everywhere you go you're an idiot.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-23 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
ever heard of trolls.
homette is a really good one apparently :')

(Anonymous) 2011-10-23 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
Not really. I'd say they're persistent, but good trolls offend mass amounts of people before they're identified. Homette usually only gets out an insulting comment or two before someone shows up and calls them troll. :)

(Anonymous) 2011-10-23 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Are you new here? I doubt Homette gives a shit what you think. And so far, you haven't come as very intelligent sounding either

(Anonymous) 2011-10-23 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this, and I'm not even a fan of homette.

[identity profile] that-douchebag.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
inorite? there are a lot of awesome female characters, is just that feminists need to complain about something.

[identity profile] homette.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
it's true man

(Anonymous) 2011-10-22 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
ia. fandom feminists are always in search of the Perfect Female Character, but this character will never exist - could never exist - and even if she did, she'd be boring as fuck.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-22 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
What about Hermione? Everybody loves Hermione....

(Anonymous) 2011-10-22 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't. Can't stand bossy people.

This is part of the problem I think, that people can't just think of female characters as characters but they are always thinking of them as FEMALE characters.

The inability of most women to judge other women as people instead of as women is astounding to me

[identity profile] sarolynne.livejournal.com 2011-10-22 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I think a lot of times the problem comes down to the fact that very few shows have more than two or three important, reoccurring female characters. Many shows only have one female character of note, which means they end up having to be WOMEN rather than just a woman.

The more writers incorporate women, and the more diverse women in stories become, the less any single female character has to be "perfect" because the less they represent all women.

That's how I see it, anyway.

[personal profile] oxfordtweed 2011-10-23 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Do you know, say what you will about Moffat, but I think Sherlock is doing a fairly good job at this. I really don't see what's wrong with Molly or Sally or any of them. Mrs Hudson puts up with Sherlock's crap about as much as you'd expect someone to (which is less than most people, considering she apparently keep raising his rent). So Sally hates him? We don't know the full story behind that, and he did air her dirty laundry at a crime scene. I'm pretty willing to bet that it wasn't the first time, either. I'd probably hate him too.

IDK. I do think it just comes down to this idea that female characters are 'supposed' to be a certain way, even when that in itself is detrimental to the case.

And, I have to admit, I'm excited as hell to see what they do with Irene Adler. I think, if anything, we can trust Gatiss to keep her from becoming some sort of super ninja cat burglar or whatever it was Ritchie did to her.

Yet, male characters rarely get judged this harsh, even by "feminists"... hmmm...

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 03:36 pm (UTC)(link)
...I've never understood this. I've always been much harsher with male characters, because my dad raised me to believe that it's okay when girls make mistakes/are afraid but men must be perfectly calm and self-assured at all times unless they are ANGRY, must NEVER CRY, and be perfect at everything. Manly, that is. If they could cook or sing or draw there was something wrong with them. My mom pretty much reinforced this idea, too. If she or I fucked up it was OH LOL ONLY TO BE EXPECTED (which was it's own kind of aggravating, but still) but if my brothers did they were a complete failure as a man.

As a result throughout my formative years I forgave female characters pretty much anything, but when that wimpy fucker Shinji started bawling in Evangelion I couldn't stand him anymore. It took me years to work through it an accept that I could like male characters who weren't bullet-spitting ultramen. And that even characters like Shinji could be strong.

...Did seriously no one else have an upbringing like this? I constantly see women in fandom writing off some clumsy weepy moron as a "woobie" as long as he has a penis and "pathetic, worthless bitch" if she has a vagina. And I have to wonder: what were their fathers like?

Food for thought.

[identity profile] gabzillaz.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. Female characters are held to a higher standard than male ones :/

[identity profile] sophiesenoo.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 05:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. It bothers me so much.

Exactly. I've never had a problem finding interesting female characters to connect with.

There's this mislead streak of pseudo-feminism in fandom that goes along the line of "she's female and we live in a sexist society, ergo there must be something wrong with her, let's see what that is." Blargh, that's not feminism and it's not helping. I'm pretty convinced these fans would not even be capable of recognizing an engaging female character. Their loss, but I wish they would keep it to themselves and not let that mindset infect fandom.
