You're... not saying that there still aren't a closeted gay actors just because Quinto came out, right? Just that in the SPN case it's a stupid tinhat concoction. Because otherwise.... gurrrrl.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-23 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
No, I'm not saying that; clearly there are still more than a few, and if they want to come out, that's worthy of respect and admiration.

But if J&J were really following the tinhat script, then they'd be enlisting dozens of people--including their wives and children--in a massive bearding plot for the purpose of appeasing homophobic fans of a moderately popular TV show...and somehow we're supposed to cluck with sympathy over the injustice (to them) of it all.

I don't follow the J&J stuff or even watch the show, and I don't think they're a couple or anything from what I've heard, but there are a lot more reasons why queer actors would want to stay closeted than just appeasing homophobic fans of the show. They might not want to be fetishized, for one thing. It's also harder for a gay actor to get roles (especially roles that have a hetero romance plot) unless they're already amazingly popular in a pretty broad demographic, which the actors in Supernatural are not- they're popular with the show's fandom, which is big, but as far as I can tell, people who don't care about Supernatural barely know who they are. They might also not want scrutiny into their personal lives, and might have had bad experiences with homophobia and are gun-shy about inviting more. They might also be afraid of being seen only as "that gay actor", and getting pidgeonholed into token gay characters or token gay movies. Plus, a lot of the guys who do this are closeted to themselves- they might think that yeah, they like guys, but it's not like the right women couldn't make them happy, or yeah, they did stuff with guys in the past but now they're normal, or even yeah, they're into guys sexually, but a woman's who they're supposed to fall in love with, right?

Also, it would not take a massive conspiracy. There are a ton of women who unknowingly marry and have babies with gay men. Google "straight spouses." This is not a hideously rare thing. It would pretty much just take keeping the stuff you do with guys private, and assuring the wife that you love her and that all this gay stuff is really just a rumor. Especially if he's not out to himself yet, and "all this gay stuff" is either not happening, or something he thinks doesn't matter. I mean, they're actors. It's not that unreasonable to think an actor can act.

Or, shockingly... sometimes the wife is aware of what's going on and goes along with the bearding plot voluntarily! Sometimes she needs a beard, too, if she's also gay or afraid of being perceived that way. Sometimes she's his friend and is cool with his reasons to stay in the closet, and doesn't mind marrying him as a friend thing. This has happened in real life a lot, too.

Like, do I think Jensen and whoever the other one was are together? No. I think I heard on Fandom Wank once that they're pretty publicly affectionate as friends, and that's the exact opposite of what someone trying to hide a relationship would do. Is it even likely that either of them are gay? No, not really. But bearding does happen, and it's weird to say that Hollywood is a totally friendly place for an out gay actor just starting out, you know?

(Anonymous) 2011-10-23 03:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I think everyone in this thread is well aware of the bearding phenomenon. But it takes a special level of crazy (and creepy) to insist that a pair of celebrities you've never met are totally doing it, as the SPN tinhats are, and I think we can all agree on that. It's DomLijah Redux.

[identity profile] fearless-rabbit.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 04:50 pm (UTC)(link)
And I'm not trying to argue against that? Assuming you know what a real person's sex life is like is gross and entitled.

But it's also kind of weird to assume that no, someone in a long term hetero relationship has to be 100% straight, or that bearding is something that never happens anymore. Again, not familiar with these guys, and they are most likely not bearding... but show biz can be a very heteronormative place, and dismissing the idea that bearding still happens because we're oh so progressive now! isn't much better.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-23 07:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Except nobody here was dismissing bearding as never happening these days. All they were saying is that in this specific situation, it's highly unlikely and the fans insisting that it's happening when they do not know anything about these actors except what they see filtered through the media is really, really creepy. You barging in and explaining bearding as if it's our first day in Queer Theory 101 is condescending as hell.

[identity profile] fearless-rabbit.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 07:12 pm (UTC)(link)
The anon I was responding to said upthread (pretty sure it was the same person) that because Quinto came out, nobody would want to have a beard anymore. Also that it would take a mass conspiracy for a gay guy to marry a lady.

If it's condescending to explain to that person how bearding works, then I don't wanna be right~

(Anonymous) 2011-10-23 07:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, no, that isn't what they said at all. Here, in case you don't want to go searching for it (emphasis mine):

No, I'm not saying that; clearly there are still more than a few, and if they want to come out, that's worthy of respect and admiration.

But if J&J were really following the tinhat script, then they'd be enlisting dozens of people--including their wives and children--in a massive bearding plot for the purpose of appeasing homophobic fans of a moderately popular TV show...and somehow we're supposed to cluck with sympathy over the injustice (to them) of it all.

What anon was saying is that according to the tinhats for this specific situation (which since you're not in the fandom, you probably glossed over that part), it is a massive bearding conspiracy and SPN and the network's entire PR staff is in on it.

If by your own admission you don't know jack about this specific instance, then please shut up and stop acting as if you do.

[identity profile] fearless-rabbit.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 07:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been following the wank and I know the tinhats have some elaborate conspiracy about it. It is the very most entertaining wank. And if you haven't noticed I DON'T THINK THE TINHATS ARE RIGHT.

I JUST AM KIND OF UNCOMFORTABLE WITH THE "OBVIOUSLY HET RELATIONSHIPS MAKE THESE DUDES STRAIGHT" SIDE LORDING IT OVER THE "MAYBE THEY COULD BE SOMETHING ELSE" SIDE. I don't have any issue with "these people are creepers." What I've seen of people complaining about the creepers is that lol obvious straight guys are straight and THAT IS WHAT I HAVE A PROBLEM WITH. See: THE ACTUAL SECRET.

Or maybe I'm just being pointlessly antagonistic today. I am kind of a bitch.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-23 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's the latter, because nobody you replied to in this thread was taking that stance. At all. Nor did they say anything suggesting such. Only that speculating to the degree the tinhats are and coming up with conspiracy theories worthy of the worst Oliver Stone film ever is both creepy as hell and fucking annoying.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-23 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry, I know I came off like kind of a bitch, too. Sometimes I think [livejournal.com profile] technophile slips shit in the water every now and then.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-24 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry babe, but if you stayed in the Supernatural fandom since S4, you're pretty much automatically a creep. Self-awareness fail on your part imo
