I kinda agree with you. Personally, I think part of the reason for lack of well-rounded female characters is because females are complicated and complex. I think it also has to do with current society. Guys rarely get any flack for the way they may act. Only if it's on one extreme. If a woman does certain things (like flirting) people might scrutinize over it when it really was nothing. She did it because she wanted to and it was fun, there was no ulterior motive and she's not a slut. A guy does it and he's considered charming. So, how can you write a well-rounded female character if you're bombarded with double standards. It's probably easier to write a clique and the feisty strong confident female character is the one most people won't have a problem with. She's supposed to be inspiring. Now write about a timid average girl and suddenly there's something wrong with her... she should be more confident with herself and stand up for herself. If you say she is those things and show it, then suddenly she's just another feisty bad ass girl...
