ia with almost everything.

i do kind of hope they get rid of the children because they just slow the show's pace. And kids can be badass.

Granted kick ass and the walking dead are far from being the same thing, but you know, they could make them less whiny.

I have no idea what this is from but D'AWW THAT LITTLE GIRL IS SO CUTE WITH HER GUN

from "Kick-Ass" :)

tbh in the comics Carl is a mini Rick, and owning bitches from the beginning (like during the zombie attack in s1, in the comics Carl picks up his mother's gun and shoots a walker straight up). I just hope they have him being a bamf in the show eventually too~

The idea of killing off the kids for being 'useless' is ridiculous. They're KIDS! Do you really want them to be offing zombies left and right? I also agree that Daryl is one of the most fascinating characters on the show and I never thought I'd say that.

However, Andrea is still my absolute favorite and I loved that she confronted Dale about him taking away her CHOICE to live or die on her own terms. Much as I'm glad she's still alive, I don't think Dale had the right to force her hand in that. Which is exactly what he did because she wasn't going to let HIM die and he knew it and used it to get her to do what he wanted. Which was bullshit.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-23 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
OMG THINK OF THE CHILDRUNNNN!!! Please. Sophia is nothing like she is in the comics (not even her looks). Carl is pretty close and I actually like him. But just because they're kids they shouldn't be killed? Give me a break. A lot of HORRID shit happens to both Carl and Sophia in the comics. And they Carl kills quite a few zombies in the comics. Read them if you haven't to maybe get a clue.

Andrea..I agree with the OP. In the show she's a whiny twit. I cannot stand her right now. In the comics she's a badass, take no shit kind of woman. She had a couple of bouts of depression, but she always bounced back. She's one of my faves. I hate what they've done to her in the show.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-24 06:57 am (UTC)(link)
My point was not that the children shouldn't be killed off simply because they're children. My point, if you had read my comment correctly, was that people shouldn't WANT the kids to die because they THINK they're useless. Most children wouldn't know how to kill zombies or help bandage wounds or leave a trail if they got separated from their group unless they were TAUGHT how to do those things. Sophia and Carl clearly haven't been, so the fandom should stop bitching about how they don't 'contribute' anything to the group and should therefore be killed off. As far as I can tell, Lori + Carol haven't contributed much to the group's survival and they're ADULTS, so why should they get a pass while the fandom cheers for the kids to die?

[identity profile] mfirefly10.livejournal.com 2011-10-24 07:14 am (UTC)(link)
While ITA with your comment about the kids, I don't get how you can then go on to call Carol and Lori useless. None of these characters are 'useless', imo, though there are certainly characters I could live without.

[identity profile] cloud-riven.livejournal.com 2011-10-24 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
I was pretty disinterested in this version of Andrea until that argument with Dale, who has been irking me so much. Seriously made me love her right there even if I'd never support her suicide; it was her choice, and Dale had no right to coerce her.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-23 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I still love everything about the show. And I still don't get people who don't understand that it's a survival story, not an action story.

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I want to read this, but there are sections I can't because of contrast issues.

That said, I get that in any cross section of humanity and randomly assorted group you are going to get some people who are just not very bright. I put the little girl and her mom in the IQ below 80 part of the bell curve. Perfectly nice people, just rather dim. That said, in all fairness, if there were ever a situation where being dim = being dead, this would be it.

I just wish that the show weren't so hell bent on being completely random with the killing and would actually show people dying because they made stupid decisions. That's the way mother nature works 90 percent of the time. But no, instead we randomly kill off people who are doing absolutely nothing wrong, and these two get a pass.

[identity profile] twenty-rooks.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I think they should teach the children how to use at least some weapons. Then they wouldn't be so helpless. And though I agree that Sophia and her mother aren't very bright, I think it's interesting to see weak people in this too. I mean, weak not just when it comes to skills, but emotionally and mentally weaker than the others. Just frailer people, really.

That said, I think this show could do with a little improvement in the female character department. They're all pretty disappointing so far.

I like the random killing off people to a point. Luck certainly has its place in the situation they're in. But I'd like to see some managing because of skill too.

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't fathom why they all haven't been practicing with crossbows and hatchets, etc. Instead they are clinging to guns which they dare not use. I mean, yeah, they seemed to have cottoned on to the idea that maybe giving everyone a handgun might be problematic being that some of them seem too slow to get why guns = bad idea. But, seriously, they've been scrounging for a while, has no one considered giving everyone a big ass cleaver? Or a sword? Or even a crow bar? Hell a long sharp stick would go a long way.

I'm all for survival stories, but I just find it highly unrealistic that it would take people this long to figure out basic skills. Even the slow ones should know the drill by now. They should have created hand signals and practiced maneuvers. They should be carrying gear, like compasses, soundless weapons, binoculars, maps. Instead it seems like they are winging everything as if it's the first time they've encountered zombies.

[identity profile] twenty-rooks.livejournal.com 2011-10-24 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
I'm anticipating the sword-wielder my brother says will come along later on in the story, but yeah, I definitely agree. Not to mention that it can't be that easy to hit the target when shooting, so some sort of edge/point weapon is probably better. And quieter. Couldn't they just seek out some really small towns for supplies? I mean, there would be a lot less zombies than in Atlanta!

I agree on the gear and teamwork. It's sort of turned into a protector/protected group instead of a survival team, which can't be a good idea in the long run. It's a little more understandable with the main character since he's been in a come for most of the outbreak, but he should have started organising by now. He's a trained policeman! As is his friend, and I don't know what his excuse is.

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2011-10-24 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I agree, they are trying to force this tiny group into a protector/protected community, but it just doesn't work in my mind. They are too small, too mobile, have too little protection. And there's no reason for it either. There are only two kids and both are old enough to contribute. It's not like they are toddlers or babies. And what's more it's not doing anyone any favors. If the "protectors" get injured, the protected are just going to get slaughtered.

I get the feeling that the writers have never actually seen what groups do in survival situations. It's quite surprising actually. Kids become grown ups very, very quickly when it's a matter of life and death. They learn very, very fast. In some ways they are more emotionally flexible than the adults, more willing to ditch what doesn't work and find something that does. And they do it really at an astonishingly young age. We coddle our kids because we can, but when we can't, they want to survive.

[identity profile] twenty-rooks.livejournal.com 2011-10-24 04:08 pm (UTC)(link)
This is pretty much what I think too. Maybe they're just clinging to the remnants of their previous lives and things will change as the story unfolds.

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2011-10-24 06:40 pm (UTC)(link)
In a weird way... maybe.

But it just doesn't make any sense. As a parent, I know my first instinct for my children would be to protect them and give them absolutely every tool I could to have them protect themselves. Which means, I'd have had them learning how to shoot a bow and arrow from day one. If I wanted to give them something to cling to, it would be like reading them to bed or some other comfort ritual. Otherwise, school is in session, and those kids would be taught how to fix an engine and what sort of things to scrounge for and how to hide. Those kids should have been set to siphoning gas or some other useful work. They'd be much happier knowing they can do something to support their community.

[identity profile] twenty-rooks.livejournal.com 2011-10-25 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not even a parent, but that was my first thought too; give them as many ways to defend themselves and take care of themselves as possible.

Reading/telling stories would OTOH be a wonderful way of providing comfort and creating a "family" feeling, I'd say!

Anyway, I'm told that Carl at least will have a more active role in the future (but I've no idea how).

[identity profile] miakun.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't even deal with Lori haters.

[identity profile] mfirefly10.livejournal.com 2011-10-24 07:11 am (UTC)(link)
Lori is awesome. Frak the haters.

Also, to go along with fandom-in-general's love of double-standards, I just adore how Lori gets bashed for having an affair, when Shane (who tried to RAPE her, though people never remember that) gets a pass for the same thing.

[identity profile] pearlsthatwere.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Kids are kids. Of course they're useless in a zombie apocalypse. I doubt they'll kill them off, since they're important in the comics, so there's a good chance Sophia and Carl will get way more badass.

Gotta disagree with you about those guys being the only interesting characters. Shane's my man. I love that guy.
