Why the hell is everyone creeped out by this movie? I think it looks beautiful and amazing. I'm sure if you just started watching the damn thing you'd get used to it to. But noooo, it's like some people are just reaching for reasons to not like it.

I mean, I would prefer it to be traditionally animated, too. But we all know traditional animation isn't as popular as it used to be. At least this way, I hope that maybe a younger generation will gain an interest in Tintin and it won't simply fade away into cultural obscurity.

It's not that we're balking at the CGI, it's the instinctual reaction that the style of animation just makes everything look OFF because they're trying too hard to make them look realistic. http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/UncannyValley

Honestly, I wish they made it look as cartoony as the comics do. Never read them before, but the way they made it to UV-ish makes me afraid that it'll be a flop.

I know what the uncanny valley is, ugh. The CGI in Tintin doesn't even come close to that. I don't think anything looks off. They look like people, but if people looked like how Herge drew them (like with Haddock's unusual large nose, etc).

But the fact is, CGI that tries to emulate humans as realistically as possible will always fall into the Uncanny Valley territory. CGI simply isn't advanced enough (at least, not yet) to not look slightly off and creepy. It's the same problem games like L.A Noire or Heavy Rain suffer from. They try to make the characters look as realistic as possible, yet there's still that unnatural fakeness due to it being CGI as opposed to real people.

I dunno, most of the time I played L.A. Noire I forgot that the faces were fake. The bodies look fake, yeah, but the face were amazing.

And the CGI in Tintin isn't trying to emulate humans are realistically as possible. If it were, the characters wouldn't be so stylized.

I just don't see the problem!

I agree that the L.A Noire faces were really well done, but there was still something a little...off about the eyes. I don't know why game designers haven't mastered eyes yet. They still have that creepy, glassy, dead look that real eyes don't have. Uncharted 2 is another game that had this problem. Great character models, creepy glassy eyes.

mte! I'm just fucking psyched we're getting a Tintin movie with Spielburg AND Jackson at the helm.

People need to stfu about the animation style, it looks amazing.

[identity profile] seven-costanza.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
For serious! I never would have DREAMED that two big-name people like that would care enough about Tintin to make such a big-budget movie about it.

[identity profile] runonmoonlight.livejournal.com 2011-10-24 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
Also Moffat and Edgar Wright!

[Honestly, I am most excited about Edgar Wright, I think the man is a brilliant writer. I cannot tell you how many times I have watched Hot Fuzz. It's a little bit ridiculous. However it's caused me to come to the conclusion that the man is brilliant, because I swear he writes so tightly and does not waste a line. And on top of that he's hilarious :D]

I admit to being mildly concerned about the animation style, but I am willing to give it a shot, because I don't think I can give a fully informed decision until I actually see it in theatre.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-23 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
This. Yes, it's different. Yes, it may not be to everyone's tastes. Personally, I'm just glad to see a new Tintin movie. People pay too much attention to this CGI crap instead of focusing on the characters and plot. Y'know, the things that used to matter.

[identity profile] seven-costanza.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I know!! That's what I want to yell at people...if you're a fan of Tintin, SEE THE MOVIE! You may not like the animation style, but if this movie gets enough support that might mean we'll be seeing more Tintin-related things in the future. If the movie flops, Hollywood will assume no one gives a shit about him anymore. ): Which isn't true!

[identity profile] lemon-m.livejournal.com 2011-10-24 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. I'd go see it even if it were life-action.

[identity profile] damnated.livejournal.com 2011-10-24 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know, I watched the trailer and the animation just looked... off, not quite right in a way that I can't really explain.

Not that I have anything against GCI, but it made me lose some interest in the movie.
