Except James McAvoy is not short--he's 5'7". He's average or close to average in pretty much every country.

This. In my country his height is the average.

Just off the top of my head, in the UK, America, and Sweden the average man is like 5'10".

And if you go my the young generation (sub 25) that reaches six foot.

DA. This is true, but I don't think being 3 inches shorter than a national average makes someone "short." Average heights take huge extremes into account, and I don't think I even know anyone who's 5'10" (I'm in swing dancing, where height is kind of a big deal.) I know a lot more people who are 6'4" or 5'4", you know? This is one of those things where the mode is probably more meaningful than the mean.

Actually, human heights are pretty much bell curves - for each gender, the mode is the mean (and the median).

As of 2000, the average adult male in the US was 5' 10" and the standard deviation was 2.5" (for adult women the mean was 5'4.5" with the same standard deviation) (Source: every statistics textbook published in the Oughts in the US). An adult male standing 5'7" would be more than a full standard deviation below the mean, which means it would be one of the things someone trying to describe him would mention - "Well, he had dark hair, he was pale, and he was kind of short." But he's not two SD shorter than average, so it probably wouldn't be the first thing they'd mention.

This IS short. I've heard he is EVEN shorter.

Jesus, I HATE when it is not the metric system. James is around 1.65 and this is short. The same size of Dustin Hoffman. He sees himself as short (he said in an interview he is short). There is nothing wrong in being one.

165cm is actually around 5'4, not 5'7? (I am a female, around 162cm and always thought I was short).

[identity profile] june-miller.livejournal.com 2011-10-24 07:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. It is around 5.5 or 5.6. When it comes to the height of an actor, there are generally lies involved. Others short ones are Michael J. Fox (1.64, 1.65)and Tom Cruise. And you're not short, you're average.
