Because writing two characters having sex or being in a relationship automatically = not caring at all about the characters / characterization.

Except not.

It is when the characterization revolves somewhat strongly around their sexual/relationship life/endeavors and to disregard how they're portrayed means, to me, you don't care about all facets of their personality, only those that you can toss into your fic to make it sound slightly different from the last one you wrote.

Yeaaaah no, cos for one thing, personality and characterization is almost always above and beyond sexual interest and that bullshit. How a person acts, their history and their feelings, inform how they act towards sex and relationships, and within a relationship; the reverse is not true. Anyway, not all shows/movies/whatever showcase sexual or romantic lives as of paramount importance; in fact, the fandoms I pursue tend to put romance more on the back-burner -- to be fair, the characters are usually rather more interested in saving the world.

Anyway, again, your homophobia is showing in your thought that showing a person being interested in someone of the same sex means you're "picking and choosing characterization." As if slash writers are simply unable to objectively look at two people and consider whether or not they would make sense as a pairing, and how it would happen, what would go on, etc. No, of course we're all shallow and just ditching huge swathes of characterization for shits and giggles, not actually sensitively portraying two well-characterized, in-character people falling for one another or being in a relationship with one another* -- that's impossible, amiright?

* - Obviously I am not saying every slash fic is written like this. But fuck, neither is every het fic. Or every gen fic. But I've seen a lot of slash fic that put more effort into correct and canon characterization and portrayal than the actual show's writers did, ffs. And idk, I put a lot more stock in "these two guys have had incredibly chemistry for months" than I do in "hey the writers thought this needed more sex so he's gonna hook up with this girl we brought onto the show one episode ago that he has nothing in common with."
