OP, is it ok to complain every time Abby arrives because you find her and Will aggravating?

For the record, the show does NEED Kate. Emphasis on the Needing part. I have no idea how to even understand her not being present, to be honest.

I just keep telling myself "she's on an important mission, she's on an important mission" whilst sitting in the corner rocking back and forth.

One day I want to see a Fandomsecret admitting to not loving Helen all that much, let alone other female characters.

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2011-10-25 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
I never much liked Kate. I thought she sailed in like a gamemaster's girlfriend: no real credentials, no good reason to be trusted, no particular skill set that can't be gotten some other way, and yet she was instantly befriended and given responsibility and became one of the inner sanctum. She mellowed out a bit over time, behaved less like a self-serving douche, but she never really attained anything resembling a cool power-up that would justify her being with the crew. So now she's gone (or at least off camera) and... I'm okay with that. I can't see how she will be missed.

Now what really bothers me is that they actually removed Will's power up. Remember in the first season, he could just scan a room and See What's Wrong? Somewhere along the line he lost that ability. Why? Now he's basically a pencil pusher, when he used to be a kick ass investigator. I know the shows left the Monster of the Week idea for a broader political jag, but still, with all the old ones turning up with their kick-ass skills, it would be so easy to just say "oh hey, Will is Watson's great grandchild, and that obviously supernatural skill he used to have is the blood".

Why did they do that? Was it really that expensive to highlight clues in CGI, or did they just lose the writer who knew how to write mysteries?

I agree with you about will. I love the character, but he has lost his edge in a lot of ways. I love the dynamic he and Helen used to have, but he's just become this flat character who I still love but can see why others don't.

I resented Kate in the beginning because she indirectly helped contribute to Ashley's death and then it was glossed over. I hated that the rare kick-ass mother-daughter sci-fi team got broken up so stupidly.

I SO agree about Will and his almost Abnormal ability to scan the room then.

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2011-10-25 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too about Kate. I hated that they killed off Ashley. I liked her. I thought she made sense as part of the team. And logically Kate made no sense -- she was a mercenary with no loyalties, who was working for the enemy, and a human. And she had a horribly unfriendly attitude. She had absolutely no reason whatsoever to loyal to the Sanctuary... and in the first few episodes she wasn't!. She tried to sell abnormals. She kept secrets. She didn't want to be there, and she betrayed them and didn't trust them.

And it was so obvious that the writers were in love with her character, because otherwise there was just no sane reason for the Sanctuary team to be bending over backwards to pet and coddle her and protect her from herself. They've never in the past put up with the kind of attitude and hostility Kate showed to them. She wasn't an abnormal who would fall under their mission statement. She was just a bratty human with Tragic History that should very well have been seen as not their problem.

She got better, but mainly because she started being a loyal team player and lost the worst of her annoying habits. But that wasn't until after she'd been there nearly an entire season. If Kate weren't fictional, I'd suspect she was sleeping with one of the writers.

Now what really bothers me is that they actually removed Will's power up.

The word we're looking for is Chickification (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Chickification).

He did get some of that mojo back in the last eppie, though. He was out ahead of Helen for a change. ^^

That being said, I want a Sanctuary/Criminal Minds crossover with Will being all profiler-fanboy over Rossi and/or Hotch. I do not know why, other than the emphasis on Will's profiling genius such a fic would bring, but I WANT IT.

I do love Helen. I do think the show needs Kate. And frankly, those two strong female characters are EXACTLY the reason I complain every time Abby shows up. Because her bumbling, swooning, barely-competent-at-life characterization is seriously grating on a show that has given us Helen and Kate and Erica (just for starters) and I while had some issues with Ashley's character, at least she was written as a fleshed-out and capable individual.

Disliking Abby is NOT about disliking the other non-lead females on the show - it's about disliking the way they killed her character's interest. Damn, peeps. She had so much potential...

[identity profile] tiffanynichelle.livejournal.com 2011-10-25 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
What they need to do is bring back Ashley! She was awesome.

[identity profile] dragonladyk.livejournal.com 2011-10-25 05:42 am (UTC)(link)
Abby is an example of how you wrong-foot a female character without making her Jennifer Keller of SGA. Yes, Abby is out of her depth most of the time and pulls some seriously newb shiz. However, she also pulls it together and is truly helpful: whether that's getting Will information or bashing some mook over the head, and she gets major bonus points for not subscribing to traditional romance. She gets 2/2 dates ruined and is completely fine with it, doesn't whine once, and doesn't judge Will badly for it.

But she is the only truly wrong-footed female in the show, so I could see how she could look bad to some viewers when compared with Ashley, Kate, Helen, Erika, Lillian, and Clara. :/

I dislike Kate and Abby because they are obnoxious and aggravating characters. Less so now, but at the beginning, both were REALLY grating characters. Kate had literally NO redeeming qualities and felt like a Mary Sue, and Abby came off as so. incredibly. DUMB and incompetent.

Now, I've changed my mind. I quite like Kate now, and Abby is growing on me. But I never disliked them because I thought Helen could run the show herself and there was no need for Kate or Abby or any other recurring female character.

I love Helen. I like Kate. I liked Ashley. I love Henry. I like Biggie. I hate Will. Abby is okay, but only when she is not being Will's girlfriend, because that is sort of the most nauseating thing ever. When she's doing her job, she's perfectly fine.

[identity profile] nos-servabit.livejournal.com 2011-10-26 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, when they introduced Abby's character, I really thought she was going to be the Big Bad of the season and turn out to be a spy or something for a secret organization that wanted to bring the Sanctuary around. I mean, honestly, her actions were just too good to be true. (And how did she get those files on the murder of the priest, anyways? Didn't even Henry state that he couldn't access them where they were located?)

But alas, what could have been an awesome character turn-around just resulted in a new love interest for Will. I'm okay with her, but I can't help that she is grating on my nerves. She feels very one-dimensional to me, and no matter how hard I try, I can't convince myself to like her. :/
