You sound very familiar to me, anon ...

(Anonymous) 2011-10-25 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
To me a BNF is a fan whose writing (or art!*) is so good that when you mention them most of the people in the fandom go, "yes! I know their stuff!"

So it's a compliment. Good for you, OP!

*Not sure how I rate comm moderators or people with mad organizational skillz. Probably because I haven't thought it through. But I don't think of them as Big Names.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-25 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
So popular, not good. They might just be prolific in a sea of inactivity, or be the only one in that fandom/pairing, or comment on everything, etc. I'm not going to say that BNFs don't usually also produce decent fanworks or what have you, but I've known a couple BNFs who were known almost entirely for how bad they were.

If you haven't done shitty pretentious things, just take the compliment. Jaysus.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-25 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
I know lots of BNFs who don't find the "arrogant intolerant attention whore" cliché, and I'm always annoyed when people go on about how annoying all BNFs are.
But you, OP? You sound like a real douchebag. oO Way to go to confirm all prejudices.

[identity profile] kyoto-idol.livejournal.com 2011-10-25 03:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Where did you even get douchebag out of this? Why shouldn't they be happy that the things they put effort into make other people happy, and still have a bit of a problem with the fandom politics that make titles like "BNF" a thing?

Really. How exactly does that "confirm all prejudices?"

(Anonymous) 2011-10-25 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
I was once told I was a BNF in a fandom I loved and you know what? I was incredibly flattered! This person had me in their mental list of usernames they thought of when they thought of their favourite fic in that fandom, and that meant so, sooo much to me. I didn't get involved in drama in that fandom (there wasn't much drama anyway) and I wasn't rude or cruel to people. I simply wrote a lot of fic over a long period of time, so people began to recognise my name.

In comparison, the wording in this secret makes you seem kind of unpleasant. Someone says they consider you recognisable within the fandom and your reaction can basically be summed up as "urgh"? For all your hatred of being associated with pretention, that reaction is pretty pretentious. And saying "I'll take it" makes it seem like you're somehow doing them a favour by graciously accepting the compliment as if it's some sort of trial for you. The text at the end is much nicer, but by having the font shrinking until it's almost fading out in comparison to the initial text makes the final few lines seem like they're insincere and something you thought you should add. I don't know, it just doesn't give a very nice impression.

Same here.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-25 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
But ~I am Spartacusssss!

[identity profile] santagrover.livejournal.com 2011-10-25 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
ok then

again with the extremism! jesus fandomsecrets...

(Anonymous) 2011-10-25 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
Being a BNF is neither good, nor bad. It just means that people recognize you and your works, and that you quite possibly have people following you and giving importance to what you say and do. That's neither good, nor bad, by itself.

Now, on the other hand, being an asshole, or being nice, THAT is what matters. Just because some BNFs are jerks it doesn't mean that all BNFs are like that. Similarly, just because some BNFs are adorable and nice doesn't mean that all BNFs are like that.

People are people, regardless of how famous or unknown, both in the internet and in real life. It's just that having a BNF status gives an extra reach to your words and actions. You are the one who gives those words and actions their quality, whether good or bad.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-25 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
Tell us more about how AWFUL it is to be adored, anon.

[identity profile] dragonladyk.livejournal.com 2011-10-25 05:50 am (UTC)(link)
You know... to use a high school metaphor... you can be Prom Queen without being a Mean Girl.

It's just not very common.

I'd ask for an honest (possibly even anonymous) second opinion about my behavior if I were you, anon. If people are calling you a BNF, maybe you are living up to the stereotype in how you treat other fans. Or maybe you're just the rare bird who can be popular without being a complete asshole.
