Wait, there are people who spell it this way? O_O There was so much fan outrage when the trailer was released with it spelled "Cass" tho, and I'd never even seen it spelled that way before then... then again, I don't really hang out in the thick of Supernatural fandom so idk.

LOL, agreed. To me "Cass" is short for Cassie. It would make more sense if there were two 'S's in Castiel.

Wasn't there a screenshot of a writer's whiteboard or something where his name was spelt 'Cass'? It might have been on a dvd extra or something. Or I might be making this up. I think that's where the "debate" originated from.

You see the problem is that his name is written "Cass" in the scripts according to some sources. Also all season 7 promos spelled it "Cass." It could've been written off as fandom goof or the result of fans with low spelling ability if the freakin' writers of the show themselves didn't get it wrong.

It also turns up in at least one of the novelizations. Heart of the Dragon. And I seem to remember the author citing the script.

It's supposedly spelled that way in the captions, but Jim Beaver said it was spelled "Cas" in the scripts.

It doesn't exactly bother me, but I can see it being annoying. Castiel is Cas, not Cass.

Though I'm sure I have probably typed it that way when to exited and not typing correctly.

I would just like to mention: I watched all of season 4 with subtitles on, and every time someone said 'Cass', it was spelled, well, 'Cass'. As far as I know, 'Cas' cropped up before the fans knew how the writers were spelling his name. (I'm glad that it *did* crop up, because I agree that it makes little to no sense, but there you have it.)

I'm sorry if this is a stupid question, but isn't there a difference in the 's' sound in Cass / Cas? In that 'Cas' would more usually indicate a voiced 's' and 'Cass' a voiceless one? Which one do they pronounce? I can't really tell from memory, and my mother tongue doesn't separate voiced/voiceless s at all, so it's hard for me to hear the difference anyway. But I'm pretty sure it's voiceless in 'Castiel', so shouldn't it be so in the nickname as well?
