We (meaning those of us who read fanfiction and whose first language is English) can't tell the difference between you and one of those native speakers if you don't tell us you're ESL in the first place, just so you know. We can look at your profile, but not everyone publicizes their location. So if we point out all of the problems with your language use, it's probably because we don't know that you're ESL and that we assume you are one of those native speakers who have worse grammar and spelling. We don't target you specifically because you're ESL and we feel the need to teach you.

If you happen to show that you're proficient in the language, then we'll leave you alone either way. If you tell us that you're ESL, then there won't be any question of whether you're ESL or one of those native speakers who aren't great writers, and we'll know to go easy on you and avoid treating you the way we'd treat someone who most likely doesn't care. Like someone else said in another thread, it's more likely in some places to have writers who just don't care because there's a lot more ESL people who are more careful or work with a beta-reader.

We (meaning those of us who read fanfiction and whose first language is English) can't tell the difference between you and one of those native speakers if you don't tell us you're ESL in the first place, just so you know.

I disagree with this to an extent. I've read things from lazy English-native writers (fic or just forum posts) that you can just tell came from a native by the types of errors: lazy things like lots of transposition errors, lack of capitalization, stupid chat speak abbreviations (beyond common things like lol or omg), and even just an apparent lack of coherence.

Those are all mistakes ESL can make, too, but in my experience, at least, their errors (if they make them; most seem to achieve fluency before coming to English-language places) tend to be more like poor word choice, strange conjugations, maybe non-English-style puncuation, or, in the case of fanfic especially, just plain awkward tone/structure in which you can still see what they meant (logically coherent) but it reads like a rough, over-literal intermediate translation between one language to the next.
