It's like a self-fulfilling prophecy because people like OP are less likely to immerse themselves in any kind of group that is devoted solely to the enjoyment of something nerdy, guaranteeing that groups like that exist only for the crazy fans. I recently joined a fandom-related meetup group and so far only two or three of the people I met seemed normal at all (and they don't attend regularly)

Yeah. You have to be pretty devoted to your fandom identity to stick with it despite running into the 'crazy' fans. Also, there is the fact that sometimes the crazy fans do chill out eventually, but if the casual people run off early, they'll never know.
