Objectively triggering, then? How about objectively bigoted and objectively a stalker with a creepy attitude toward the girl he purports to love, both of which are things with which many readers simply Do Not Want To Deal during their escapist fandom funtimes?

Wouldn't objectively triggering be something that triggers everyone though? If we're just defining it as someone that could easily trigger someone, we'd have to add a lot of characters to the objectively triggering pile - Equius, Eridan, Mindfang, Vriska, Gamzee...

[identity profile] yucari.livejournal.com 2011-10-25 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
All of those characters are triggering, though.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-25 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
But they're obviously not triggering to everyone so calling them objectively triggering doesn't make sense. There really isn't anything objective about triggers.

If they have triggered people - and they have - then they are objectively triggering characters.

It's not like rape, abuse, ableism, and violent murder aren't all garden-variety triggers or anything.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-25 06:15 pm (UTC)(link)
By that logic, all of the characters are objectively sympathetic because someone has found every single one of them sympathetic. But I have a hard time calling, for example, Eridan an objectively sympathetic character because not everyone is going to find him sympathetic.

Sympathy or lack thereof is an opinion. Triggering is a quantifiable psychological reaction to specific stimuli.

DA

Sympathy isn't a psychological reaction to stimuli? Generally a much less severe one, but there's nothing really separating feeling sympathy and being triggered conceptually.

It's not really objective if not everyone thinks so...

SOME people might be triggered by Equius, but not everyone sees him in that light.
