Wow, your empathy's running a quart low.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-25 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
yeah, having to play "aspergers or asshole" for the last couple of years has really drained it. Course then I realised that it was stupid to have to guess which was which. There is no such thing as aspergers, they are all just assholes.

Uh...huh...

Well, I'm lucky for you that your life is charmed enough you don't have friends or relatives who are actually on the spectrum. Watching a seven year old who goes into hysterics and throws up if his food is the wrong texture is difficult.

that's not a disease, that is a child throwing a tantrum. Punish the tantrum and you'll get a normal kid, excuse it because the kid has a disease and is "speshul" then you'll get an asshole. One of these is a lot more work and makes a parent feel like they are the bad guys, one puts the burden of dealing with the results on everyone else though. Asshole-syndrome parents choose the latter everytime.

Ok, how about being sent to the hospital because your autistic brother just went into a psychotic episode and smashed your face in? Is that a tantrum? When he has a nervous breakdown every time he has to decide what to say to his girlfriend? When he isn't sure whether his thoughts are affecting the outcome of the sports game that he's watching?

Yeah, I'm sure he's just a nerdy kid who doesn't want to try talking to people.

Sorry asshole, autism and aspergers is a real thing- maybe a lot of people self-diagnose but that doesn't mean there aren't real people with the disorder.

There is no such thing as aspergers

What makes you believe this?

(Anonymous) 2011-10-25 12:37 pm (UTC)(link)
having met the assholes who claim to have it, and the parents who claim their kids have it. The latter as a way of putting the burden of dealing with their children on others and not themselves due to 100% pure laziness, and the former, well, pretty much the same. Why work to change into a decent human being when you can claim to be speshul and expect everyone else to humor you after all.

No, no such thing. Just bad parents and lazy assholes.

So basically, inexplicably translating your limited personal experience and apparent lack of research into sweeping generalizations?

I'm also curious if there are any other disorders, syndromes, or conditions you believe to be fake.

[identity profile] tigerdreams.livejournal.com 2011-10-25 06:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, except no. Having known someone in real life with Asperger's (not self-diagnosed internet Asperger's), I've seen what it's like for someone to freak out and obsess about how they come across to others because they genuinely miss social cues, or how they cannot handle large groups or loud noises, and despite knowing that social disconnects happen because of an issue with them, and their actively trying to compensate for it as well as they can, misunderstandings still happening and causing them significant distress. So no. Deciding that everyone is actually neurotypical and just being an asshole doesn't make it true -- it just makes YOU an asshole.
