Seriously.

[identity profile] kasumi-sora.livejournal.com 2011-10-26 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
It is a sad day. =(

[identity profile] gertie-flirty.livejournal.com 2011-10-26 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with everything in this secret.

[identity profile] stella-down.livejournal.com 2011-10-26 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
he's still doing some Titans stuff with Wolfman, isn't he?

(Anonymous) 2011-10-26 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Slightly OT -- I can understand the frustration, but being firmly in the "inking is not just tracing" camp, I wanted to stick up for inking as a different and pretty awesome skillset. I realize that a crap layout is a crap layout, but good inking can help dramatically (and conversely, bad inking can ruin a good thing).

[identity profile] lashiec.livejournal.com 2011-10-26 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, I've had sketches I really liked botched with cruddy inking, and vice versa.

Came here to say this. OP, you're a comic book fan but you referred to inking as "tracing"? WHAT

[identity profile] xelestri.livejournal.com 2011-10-26 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
This. Inking is more involved and has more creativity involved than most people outside the industry tend to realize.

OP

(Anonymous) 2011-10-26 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
I know they're invaluable and comics would be shit without them. It just scalds me that he's not producing his own layouts, just fixing someone else's art.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-26 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Do we actually know the story behind it though? Is it a 'demotion' that was forced on him, or did he specifically want to ink on the book? Gail Simone was offered Batgirl, right? Rather than being told she had to do it. Perez surely has even more seniority, so it's likely he was given options and choices. Maybe this was his first choice.

(Also, considering how much DCnU!Ollie's look reminds me of DCU!Roy at times, maybe this is Perez's way of getting to sneakily inking a Titan again.)

[identity profile] gabzillaz.livejournal.com 2011-10-26 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
There's nothing wrong with inking, it isn't just "tracing". Bad inking can ruin a gorgeous picture and good inking can make a mediocre picture better.

But I agree that I'm sad such an amazing artist is working in such a crappy book.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-26 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Why so much hate for this book? I actually kind of like it...

[identity profile] krillia.livejournal.com 2011-10-26 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
Same reason there is hate for a lot of these books: It's really damn hard to recognize the character we've known for decades.

I'm sticking it out until they do something horribly insulting, though. Largely because of the art (huge fan of both Jurgens AND Perez), and because I don't think JT Krul has anywhere to go but up after Rise of Arsenal. ^^;

[identity profile] tastylogic.livejournal.com 2011-10-26 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
Krul is out after issue 4 (I think) and had been replaced by Ann Nocenti. She's supposed to be awesome so *fingers crossed*

I'm a bit annoyed you think 'inkers' are tracers (the effort that goes into correcting, cleaning and prettifying pencils is not an easy art), but the overall sentiment is there.

[identity profile] dinerstate.livejournal.com 2011-10-26 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
Here for the George Perez appreciation. :D

[identity profile] krillia.livejournal.com 2011-10-26 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
(First, OP, I shall take your "tracing" comment as the result of frustration over the situation.)

I as well raised my eyebrow at the creative team when it first came out. I know many of us are feeling betrayed by DC at the moment but, as someone else said, we don't actually know the details. It seems to me that if the PTB were willing to let goddamn Liefeld pencil a book, they would have done the same for Perez if he'd wanted one.

Also? Dan Jurgens is absolutely adorable in his excitement and fanboying (http://dcu.blog.dccomics.com/2011/07/28/dan-jurgens-on-george-perez-inking-green-arrow/)

OP

"(First, OP, I shall take your "tracing" comment as the result of frustration over the situation.)"

This. Bitterness makes for inappropriate wording. I know it's about making the pencils look as good as they possibly can, and that it's not an easy job.

Nice to know at least the guy Perez is working with appreciates him.

[identity profile] tastylogic.livejournal.com 2011-10-26 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
I'm a big Green Arrow fan and a George Perez fan, so I can see the frustration. But like others have said, we don't know if this was forced on Perez or if it was put on the table to take or leave. And there are still books to come out, so Perez might be working on something else and using the GA book to keep himself fresh. (For example:I know Nikola Scott wasn't used in any onf the New 52 books (grr!), but it's been said that she'll work on something late.) And a good, solid, and talented inker can really make or break a book.

It wasn't a good book, I'll give you that. I'm hoping it gets better or I will be helpless with screams.

[identity profile] krillia.livejournal.com 2011-10-26 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
Back of week 5 releases say Nicola Scott will be working with James Robinson on a Justice Society book based in whatever Earth-2 has become in the DCnU. I'm not sure whether I want to be thrilled or suspicious.

I find Green Arrow looks absolutely golden if you place the book in side-by-side comparison to the bullshit his former sidekick is in now. Otherwise it's perplexing, cliche and decidedly NOT Ollie.

DC always seemed to have a fair amount of respect for George Perez and his art. I'm sure that if he wanted to be the main artist for a title, they would find a title for him. But, even though inking isn't lesser than creating the original work--just less prestigious--it is almost certainly less work. The guy has done a lot of work over the years, maybe he just would like to do something easier.

[identity profile] stayintime.livejournal.com 2011-10-26 05:59 am (UTC)(link)
George Pérez is like a god to me.
He's the reason I got into Teen Titans.

[identity profile] romanticide-xd.livejournal.com 2011-10-26 07:10 am (UTC)(link)
Isn't he writing Superman? Maybe he is too busy to maintain a montly title drawing... also inking is not tracing. In many cases the inker can make a subpar artirst look spectacular.

[identity profile] i-paint-the-sky.livejournal.com 2011-10-26 01:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's what I was thinking too. A lot of the people working the DCU are on multiple books and even if Perez isn't doing the interiour art, I believe he is drawing the covers.
