You haven't seen the hundreds of other people who compare him to Batman?

I don't know about gary-stu though. The dude was pretty messed up in the head from all the trauma, and the show didn't present that like it was some kind of asset (in fact, it was pretty detrimental to him and prevented him from forming healthy relationships and having hobbies that didn't revolve around him obsessing over his parent's murders. He wasn't perfect, he didn't have any friends in the beginning, and he was shown to be kind of a twat at first. Whatever else you want to say about his character, he didn't really seem gary stu-ish and perfect to me)

[identity profile] ketita.livejournal.com 2011-10-26 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
OP may feel the Gary-Stu-ism because of his power and quick rise in the rankings. But I thought the show explained it plausibly (it's about appealing to the fans of Hero TV, after all, and Barnaby was hella gimmicky for the show). And the fact is, Tiger has the potential to be really powerful as well, it's just that the point of his character is to be a bit bumbling. So of course Barnaby looks even better next to him.

[identity profile] megalomaniageek.livejournal.com 2011-10-26 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. Barnaby's crippling emotional problems are presented as nothing but a flaw; simply being powerful is not enough to be a Stu/Sue.

[identity profile] stunt-muppet.livejournal.com 2011-10-26 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
...I thought that was the point, though? That he had the same brooding revenge motive as Batman but was in the wrong genre for it?

[identity profile] damnated.livejournal.com 2011-10-26 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Why are everyone and their mother labelled as mary-sues/gary-stues when someone doesn't like their character?

I agree with the Batman comment, but really?

[identity profile] kryptoncat.livejournal.com 2011-10-26 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
You get off your butt to watch a show?! Do you jazzercise to it, as well?

[identity profile] joshua-glass.livejournal.com 2011-10-26 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, don't mock! I find the best motivation to do my physiotherapy exercises if I put a movie on. XD

I think Kotetsu is the one who is much more of a Gary Stu than Barnaby. He's handsome, stylish, has a hot school girl lusting after him, has a partner who comes to respect him greatly, etc. Sure, he starts out as a loser but everything works out for him in the end. He's like a self-insert character created for middle aged men.
For Barnaby I can see the Batman thing but Gary Stu? Nah.

[identity profile] megalomaniageek.livejournal.com 2011-10-26 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
...But he's an idiot and most people - particularly his daughter - think he's a loser for the vast majority of the show. He's constantly upstaged by his younger partner, he's losing his powers, and nobody is his fan. He is not a Gary Stu; he is a character that is not completely sucky who goes through an arc where he becomes more powerful. This is what we call a "hero."

Why doesn't anyone on this comm know what a mary sue or gary stu is? I feel like we need to set up some kind of workshop or something to educate people

How I got my girlfriend to watch this series, true story:

Me: You're going to love Barnaby...! He's like Batman crossed with Miles Edgeworth.
Her: !? ...Hmm. Just as long as there's no one who's like the Joker crossed with von Karma.
Me: *thinks of Lunatic, whose secret identity had just been revealed* ..........
Her: ..............
Me: ...Um.

[identity profile] crimsontriforce.livejournal.com 2011-10-26 09:57 am (UTC)(link)
Glad I'm not the only one who thought of Miles but OMG Von Karma XDDD My pitch is "Some guy who dressed like Godot but is actually Laguna from FFVIII and Miles Edgeworth fight CRIME! In SILLY SUITS!" ...haven't gotten anyone to watch the series yet. I wonder why :p

I guess you haven't caught on to the way just about everything in T&B takes something totally unoriginal from the conventions of super hero comics and kind of takes it apart. Everything about Barnaby that makes him seem cliche is to me what also makes him interesting because of the other more unexpected ways he's very much not Bruce Wayne. His Batman-like background is one of the several things about him that's exploited because the viewership of Hero TV find more appeal in that kind of a hero, but in reality he's a textbook Slytherin, a perfectly decent person but still not exactly heroic in his motivations or ideology, and is very good at faking charm but actually a really dry, practical, unsociable kind of person who's generally more interested in robotics than people and would be much happier being something other than a Hero.

This whole show is about how phony the world of celebrity heroes is because it's made for entertainment and profit rather than practicality or true altruism, just like typical super hero fiction is outlandish and unrealistic because it's for entertainment. Without giving away anything about the second half of the season, I'll just say the parallels between Barnaby and Batman have to be intentional and are just a starting point of his character development, because the whole point is that he becomes more and more his own person instead of that image.

(but I still really enjoyed it)

[identity profile] xenafox.livejournal.com 2011-10-26 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
Have you not seen the amazing amount of photoshopped Barnaby-on-Batman "MY PARENTS ARE DEEAAAD" pics? Other people have made the connection. But on the subject of a gary-stu specifically, no.

[identity profile] starbonds.livejournal.com 2011-10-26 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
Yes to batman and no to gary stu. He's fucked up in the head and has too many flaws to be considered one.

[identity profile] mollyandfriends.livejournal.com 2011-10-26 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
The Batman part I definitely agree with. I also thought he was a bit of a Gary-stu... but keep watching. You'll probably change your mind.

[identity profile] copperiisulfate.livejournal.com 2011-10-26 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
lolol bat-barnaby! i can see how the earlier episodes give that impression but i agree with the others up-thread in that this show does a really great job subverting the stereotypes.

as an aside, i think the terms "gary stu" (and mary sue) are being tossed around left and right and slowly losing meaning...

[identity profile] diorama23.livejournal.com 2011-10-26 08:39 am (UTC)(link)
Umm, that's not a secret.

[identity profile] deiopea.livejournal.com 2011-10-26 02:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Fandom made the Batman comparison immediatedily, so you're not alone on that. The Gary Stu part, though? I think I might be behind with the definition :/ I mean, he has flaws, bad things actually affect him, he goes through character development, earns his happy ending... One could argue whether the characters and plot are well written or not, but he doesn't seem gary stu-ish to me. Now, if I was watching Hero TV, then yeah, I'd problably think that ;)

(Anonymous) 2011-10-26 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
How can someone be a gary stu version of Batman? Batman is already a gary stu!
