It's a Shakespearean thing. When the king is evil or the proper line of succession has been interrupted, the land gets sick because the natural order or things has been thrown out of whack.

I just had to give some love to Zira in this thread since no one mentioned her yet. Dear god what I wouldn't give to see a prequel in which young Scar and young Zira meet and team up and have fledgling evil adventures... oh man.

Scar is one of my faves, too - he's so evil you just can't NOT like him. XD Too bad he got a lot less interesting once he took power, which is why I really wish we got some more insight on his rule.
