ugh. ia. that 'true fan' argument makes me want to slap someone.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-26 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Hmmm...now that you mention it, most of my favorite TV and movie characters aren't the main characters too.

[identity profile] rosehiptea.livejournal.com 2011-10-26 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
I thought everyone watched "Happy Days" for Fonzie.

[identity profile] 8bitcat.livejournal.com 2011-10-26 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
I watched Buffy for Spike, and DBZ for Vegeta.

Just tell people to stop treating fandom like some bullshit cock contest.

[identity profile] dgcatanisiri.livejournal.com 2011-10-26 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
See, here's the logic behind people criticizing others abandoning ship or something because of Cas no longer being a regular on the show. The other characters you mention, barring Spike, are characters who were there from day one, which is different from Cas, which is where they get the bad attitude from.

That said, I HATE 'true fan' arguments, because it's absolutely horrible to people and takes away any enjoyment the person has of being involved, which turns around and pushes them away from the fandom entirely. It's just a horrible attitude.

Same here anon. I still watch House for Wilson and Cas was the reason I watched Supernatural

[identity profile] sewingrose.livejournal.com 2011-10-26 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Who didn't watch DBZ for Vegeta?

Actually, isn't it usually considered rare for the favorite characters to be the main one?

[identity profile] gabzillaz.livejournal.com 2011-10-26 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
I usually like the secondary characters more than the main ones too. :P

[identity profile] blackmare.livejournal.com 2011-10-26 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
THIS IS BECAUSE WILSON IS AWESOME.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-26 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
The only time I watch SPN is for Crowley. :)

[identity profile] sullen-strange.livejournal.com 2011-10-26 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
Some assholes think that you need to love every aspect of a show in order to be a fan. There is no such thing as a "true fan"! If you like the show for any reason, you are a fan!

(Anonymous) 2011-10-26 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
Here, here OP. As much as I hate to admit, I did start watching Supernatural for Castiel and found him as more of an interesting character than the main ones. I don't and haven't participated in fandom so I'm not sure what the deal is lol.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-26 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
Have you watched an alternate universe Buffy the Vampire Slayer and House? I'm pretty sure that Spike, Willow, and Wilson are all main characters.

Especially Willow. She was in every single episode, and a key part of... most of the plots.

[identity profile] unstoppablei.livejournal.com 2011-10-26 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
Cas is my favorite, I make no apologies. I've watched the show from the beginning and cheered and grieved with all the characters, but no one captured my attention like Cas, and I'm pissed and sad that he's gone. There is no way that this makes me a 'worse' fan because I don't adhere to this bullshit "Winchesters or nothing" mentality that everyone, including the writers, seem to have. But that's a rant for another day.

Point is, OP, I feel you.

[identity profile] countess-k.livejournal.com 2011-10-26 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
Don't bother OP. Some of those 'true fans' even think Cas owes Dean an apology for letting Sam out of the panic room in season 4, or that he was responsible for the split between the brothers because he told Dean about Sam's demon blood addiction!!!

During Spoiler TV's recent character competition - you know the one that you're supposed to vote for your favorite character - the folks over at CW lounge's "Castiel hate thread" were calling for the blood of those fans who voted Cas over Dean because according to one poster "Voting against one of the boys is equal to betraying the show." When he won however, the same fans were saying they'd vote for whoever was against him in the finale. That's not betraying the show at all!!!

Before Castiel's departure there was much Cas!fan bashing because some of them had said they would stop watching and other fans were worried about the ratings. Now, three Cas-less episodes in, the ratings are the same, which proves that either most Castiel fans stayed loyal or it didn't matter in the overall picture. But I still believe if they didn't want to watch a show they no longer enjoyed they had a right. I stopped watching Naruto when Sasuke was taken out. And to me it doesn't matter if the character came at the beginning or the end, particularly if the character has a few ships attached to it.

Personally I like Supernatural better when there are more regular secondary characters than not.

But.. he's an ugly, useless pansy.

[identity profile] twenty-rooks.livejournal.com 2011-10-26 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
I don't understand that "true fan" sort of reasoning at all. If you're a fan you're a fan, and that's that.

Personally though, I always primarily watch/read stuff for the plot, no matter which characters I love. There are a couple of rare cases where I hated the main character so much that I couldn't continue though, but it takes a lot for that to happen.

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2011-10-26 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
Anytime anyone pulls out the whole "True fan" bullshit I want to yell.

Because honestly, being a fan of something makes you a fan. There's no way to be more 'true' than anything else.

[identity profile] rivulet027.livejournal.com 2011-10-26 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't watched Bones past S2 because I was spoiled for what happens to Zack. I stopped reading Marvel for awhile when they killed one of my fav chars and only started reading when they brought him back and made him a member of a team.

You like who you like. Don't see why anyone has to fuss over it.

[identity profile] rocketgirl2.livejournal.com 2011-10-26 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
Whatever. I'm a Cas girl and I will always be a Cas girl. Come chill with me if other people are being bitches.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-26 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
If you were say, skipping episodes that didn't feature the character you were watching for, I'd classify you as a fan of the character and not the show.
Which isn't to say its bad, for example, I was watching Spike Season 8 instead of Angel Season 5. It took me a couple years to become an actual fan of Angel as a show instead of a continuation of a single character I liked.

[identity profile] lavosspawn.livejournal.com 2011-10-26 05:44 am (UTC)(link)
I get attached to side characters over main characters a lot. Probably because main character's personalities tend to get a little wonky and overblown after so long.
