And I think it would have been a better movie if there had been more emphasis on Bowie's crotch!

but srsly, I loved the silly stuff as much as the message stuff. Well maybe not the Fierys, poor puppeteering and greenscreening with those

[identity profile] unstoppablei.livejournal.com 2011-10-26 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
MORE emphasis! Damn, that movie is like crotch city already! Half the time he's just sitting around playing with his balls.

The Fierys is the one scene I always fast-forward.

[identity profile] stella-down.livejournal.com 2011-10-26 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
they were representations of her childhood toys that were scattered around her room, weren't they? I always thought the whole movie was supposed to be a big metaphor for Sarah growing up, and the silly things were a part of that.

[identity profile] neurotic-angel1.livejournal.com 2011-10-26 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
I always thought the same as well. That she's leaving them behind, and learning that she can't be a child forever, but if she ever needs the comfort of her childhood dreams and the sweet stuffed animals they'll always be there.

[identity profile] wldcatsprstr-14.livejournal.com 2011-10-26 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
But the point is that you can do both. That you have to grow up but you can grow up and not automatically have to throw away all of your childish things. You can always hold only them in some way because you'll always need them. Growing up is a process that starts at one point--when you realize that life isn't all about the instant gratification of your needs and that some things are more important. Sarah realizing that she can't always get what she wants and that she has to stop being a whiny brat was the beginning of her process.

It would have been a better movie if the songs were not in it, and the ugly fiery green scene did not exist at all. Oh, and Bowie getting more screen time then 12 or so minutes.

A movie without "Dance Magic Dance?" You're crazy!

What, you don't like "You Remind Me of the Babe?"

(It had some good ideas but I never want to sit through that movie again. Keeping this anonymous because my f-list loves it and it's OK to not like things if they are not Labyrinth.)

It also wouldn't have been nearly as much fun, though.

I love the silly bits, though! I love all of it! In fact-

What babe?

[identity profile] cousinmary.livejournal.com 2011-10-26 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
The Bog and cleaners -were- the childish things she had to get past... hence the getting past them part.

[identity profile] smittenlotus.livejournal.com 2011-10-26 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
MTE. Besides the movie had the muppets basically, and it wouldn't have been easy to take it all that seriously anyway.

i agree with this. i think it could have been one of the most remembered childhood films of all time if there was:

1. More Bowie. Not because it's Bowie, but because Jareth was a horribly underused character.

2. More emphasis on letting go of your childhood. Because when it did do those scenes (the dance with Jareth, throwing away her toys in her bedroom, the final "You have no power over me" scene) the movie really shone.

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2011-10-26 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
This movie would have been so much better if it had followed through on the narrative promise that he was really after Sarah. That stealing the baby is not how the Goblin King gets babies--it's the trick of how he gets brides.

*still bitter about this after all these years*

The 'attack the castle' scene needed a lot more coherence than it got, the Fiery scene ought to have been chucked out, and Jareth lost a lot of his dangerous edge by repeatedly showing up and not doing enough.

So yeah. Just because it's not as good as it could have been, doesn't mean that people don't write amazing analysis of it. I wish I could find the link, because there's this really good one out there, where Sir Diddymus is portrayed as being an adult who can't smell nasty rumors of the Bog of Eternal Stench, and Sarah's maturation over the 'it's not fair!' line.

Anyone remember this one?

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2011-10-26 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
It needed the silly stuff, otherwise it would have been horrifically grim. If you look at it, some weird man kidnapped her brother and promised she'd never see him again. Then he put her through hours of mind-fuckery, imprisonment in an obliette, she was chased by a pack of creatures that wanted to tear her to pieces, drugged, brainwashed, skeevily seduced while under the influence of drugs, shot at and menaced, all while counting on the good will of a hideously deformed man, a huge creature who can hurl boulders, and a psychotic fox who threatens her with a sword.

Without the silly factor, this would scare the pants of the kids who watched it. As it is, I'm surprised that there isn't more dark!fic written for it.

[identity profile] dinerstate.livejournal.com 2011-10-26 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, was that what it was about? I was a little busy focusing on what could have only been a baby stuffed into David Bowie's tights.

[identity profile] othellia.livejournal.com 2011-10-26 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
BUT THE BOG OF STENCH WAS TOTALLY THE BEST PART, TRUFAX.

[identity profile] rozola.livejournal.com 2011-10-26 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
i'm so torn when it comes to this movie. it has so many amazing moments, and yet so many bad ones. when it does things well, it does things really well. but when it does things badly, you end up with stuff like the Fiery scene. :(

I just like it. *shrugs*

But I agree that some of that stuff is Monty Python humor and it detracts a bit from the film. Otherwise, everything else is fine with me.
