It's the same for everything, though. It's not good- until X does it! It's just human. :)

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2011-10-29 07:00 pm (UTC)(link)
It doesn't ruin a story for me but I do find it kills all drama and tension, especially in action scenes, when you know all of the characters (or at least all of the author's favourites) are always going to be just fine.

But then I'm an ASoIaF and CoD fan, so there are plenty of series with high main character body counts for people like me ;p

I blame Arthur Conan Doyle.

[identity profile] rosehiptea.livejournal.com 2011-10-29 07:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I generally think that's a cheap stunt too, but it's not terrible to make exceptions when it's someone you like. They're fictional characters!

Duck AND POTATO DECIDED THAT, AT THE END OF THIS SEASON OF SPN, THEY'RE GOING TO RETIRE QUIETLY WITH THE BABBY AND RAISE IT TOGETHER. I KNOW THAT SOUNDS QUITE NORMAL, SO LET ME THROW IN MY CRAZY REASONING. IN THE LAST TWO SEASONS Duck HAS BRANCHED OUT INTO DIRECTING AND VOICE ACTING, AND HAS ALSO BEEN VOCAL IN HIS DISLIKE OF WHERE SPN IS GOING. I BELIEVE HE'S DOING THIS TO BECOME A MOAR BEHIND THE SCENES PERSON WHEN SPN FINISHES AND THE BABBY ARRIVES. POTATO MEANWHILE SEEMS TO HAVE BECOME AWARE OF HIS LIMITATIONS AS AN ACTOR AND THE VIABILITY OF HIM BEING IN A HOLLYWOOD FILM. IT'S THE COMBINATION OF THESE THINGS THAT MAKES IT OBVIOUS THAT THEY'VE DECIDED TO SETTLE DOWN AND START THEIR FAMILY. I IMAGINE THAT THE WIVES WILL EITHER STAY AROUND LIKE NOW, OR SIMPLE DISAPPEAR IN A QUIET DIVORCE THAT NO ONE WILL GIVE A FUCK ABOUT ONCE SPN ENDS.

Now I worry for Elliot.

"He's too popular to disappear, you must resurrect him, somehow!"

Pandora Hearts.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-29 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I usually think the same way as you do on this sort of thing, but in terms of PH, as long as Elliot doesn't somehow get resurrected, it's fine. Really, it all boils down to who the character is and what they contribute to the story. I love Elliot! But he's the type of character that probably contributes more to the story as a dead man than a living one. And as much as I love Reim, he doesn't contribute much to the story either way aside from being a close friend of Break and Sharon so I think things that also makes a difference when it comes to whether or not a permanent or temporary death is best for the situation.

Idk if any of this even makes sense, I just felt like sharing my thoughts on the matter.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-29 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometimes I can stand "thought dead/was going to die, but turns out fine" if it's rare and there would be a good reason to not know. But I hate dying-and-coming-back unless it's a story that has a lot of focus on the supernatural and they come back as a ghost or something. Other than that, it's so obnoxious and overused. Cheap drama.

One time I read this book that had something like that happening every two chapters and by the end of the book I was like, "Okay just kill them all!" I think one character actually did die for real but then she appeared again to help guide another dead character back from the afterlife so HE could come back to life and... it was so ridiculous.

...But TBH I was also really glad when my favorite characters in Pokemon Adventures were revived from petrification after being like that for about a year real-time. I justified my feelings with the excuse that they weren't really dead.

[identity profile] theprincesslime.livejournal.com 2011-10-29 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah Reim's "He's really alive" moment was done well.

And Elliot? Elliot's death was single-handedly the most amazingly done death in fiction I've seen. If he had to go I'm glad he went like that. He was an amazing guy but, his death wouldn't have been something cheap. I Guess Mochijun blindsided us and made us second guess to who "really" died. ;_; Elliot.

He and Leo will make out in heaven, idk. /only tru slash love ever.

[identity profile] caffeine-buzz.livejournal.com 2011-10-29 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
With the way that part ended, I kinda wonder if Reim's not-death was just to tease the readers into a false sense of security. "Oh no, Reim's dead! Wait, no he's not, whew. That's a relief....wait a sec OMG Elliot D:"

[identity profile] atelierlune.livejournal.com 2011-10-30 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Like so many things, I think that it's all in the execution. Serial comics seem to rely really heavily on it, and it cheapens it as a device. "We're in another corner. What should we do to get out of it? I know! Bring back X!"

At the same time, there have been moments in video games where a character either returned or there was a reveal that a character had made prior arrangements for an event that they could not be physically present for, and I was moved to tears.

[identity profile] neoyi.livejournal.com 2011-10-30 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
I know the feel. I don't like the "Death is Cheap" usage, but I still cheered when Rufus Shinra was alive in Advent Children. It was the only highlight of an otherwise awful movie.

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2011-10-30 08:04 am (UTC)(link)
The difference is that no one ever stated that Rufus was dead in FF7; it was left up to the player's imagination. (Tseng wasn't even supposed to have been implied to be dead, that was a mistranslation that had a lot of J-fandom scratching their heads as to why we all thought it was.)

[identity profile] forever-alone.livejournal.com 2011-10-30 10:32 am (UTC)(link)
It's been a very long time since I've checked this guy's dialogue so it's possible I'm misremembering (maybe he was talking about Pres. Shinra instead) - but there's an NPC in Kalm who mentions that Rufus is dead. The only reason this has stuck in my mind is because the first time I played Rufus was my favorite character and I was in denial that he could've died in that attack, and when I spoke to that NPC my world crashed down around me... lol. Of course it's always fair to say that people just assumed he was dead and spread the news, so there's still a loophole there that could justify his still being alive in AC. Personally now that I've grown up and gotten over my teenage obsession with Rufus I now hate that they kept him alive for AC.

Wow I talked way more about this than I intended to, ha, sorry about that.

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2011-10-30 10:45 am (UTC)(link)
I guess I never talked to that NPC. I can't find the reference anywhere in the game transcripts online or on the FF7 wikis either, though.

Ehhhhh I actually always kind of figured him and Tseng would be back. They were popular characters (unlike, say, Rufus's dad or Hojo) and their deaths weren't necessary to drive the plot forward (unlike, say, Aeris's or Zack's). Tends to get one resurrected in popular fiction.

here I go rambling again...

[identity profile] forever-alone.livejournal.com 2011-10-30 02:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah I tried searching for it in scripts before I commented, but I guess no one transcribes every single NPC convo after every single event (unsurprising, as that would be a huge undertaking) but it's a guy near the entrance to Kalm on the upper part of the screen, possibly wandering/standing near the Inn? Obviously it's after Diamond Weapon's attack, but I'm not sure at what exact point in the plot he says it. I wish I had a save near there so I could check. Kind of makes me want to replay the game specifically to find it though, which is so nerdy I can't even...

Popularity is probably my least favorite reason for resurrecting characters, I hate the fan pandering involved and it usually cheapens the emotional impact of the original deaths. Even so, I actually would've loved to see Hojo come back! I like the idea that a nutjob scientist like him would find some way to bring himself back. I could ramble on about this for hours but I'll stop myself now, I'm hyped up on caffeine so I keep talking and talking, ahh.

Re: here I go rambling again...

(Anonymous) 2011-10-31 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
You don't have to replay the game. Yinza's script is pretty convenient (though not 100% complete) for NPC dialogue. I think the line you're talking about is this:

Redhead
Hey, listen to me! I heard the barrier protecting Sephiroth is gone!
But with Rufus dead, the Shinra troops don't know what to do. Heidegger and Scarlet don't have what it takes to lead the troops......
I really thought something was finally going to get done, but everything's the same... not a damn thing's changed!

They'd probably argue the NPC was just going off of misinformation (since they are a random NPC) but damn, he got blasted by a WEAPON.

Re: here I go rambling again...

[identity profile] forever-alone.livejournal.com 2011-11-01 06:00 am (UTC)(link)
That's it exactly, thanks! It's cool that there is a script with most of the NPC dialogue.

It is reasonable to assume the NPC has been misinformed. I agree though, that attack looked pretty fucking brutal. And I may not like it, but surviving a Weapon attack to the face/body and still looking so damn pretty in the movie sequel is an admirable achievement even for Rufus.
