I must be in some pretty good groups online, because I'm actually a little confused as to why someone would hide their gender for fear of being treated differently.

By the by, very creative;y made secret!

Women hide their gender in male dominated forums b/c it's not unusual on the Internet for men to harass women and not only sexually with the whole a/s/l thing, tell them they can't be female b/c women aren't interested in this topic, tell women their opinions on this topic aren't right/stupid/whatever mainly 'cause their female even if the men had previously thought that opinion valid it becomes invalid b/c of "OMG, tits!" and so on. Yes, I've had this happen to me and I've seen it happen to other females too.

If you've not had this happen, count yourself lucky.

I hide my femaleness on the Internet for this very reason. I don't want to deal with this shit anymore especially since I sometimes identify as male. I tend to be more gender neutral with sliding degrees of maleness and femaleness.

Wow, I'm terribly sorry you or anyone else has had to deal with that on a regular basis. I really haven't had it happen to me...ever, as far as I remember. I've had people call me a guy if I don't say what gender I am, but that's about it.

Your experience =/= everyone else's. You're fortunate. And that's great! I've seen some progress in this department in my own (considerably greater) experience. Right now you're reaping the benefits of some of the first women to enter those areas and expose themeselves to potential abject hostility on the parts of childish miscreants; however, not all of them chose to do so, like the OP. Flinging childish insults and whinging about how anyone who has had a difference experience must be lying doesn't help things move along, however.

(Yes yes you've been "at it" for almost a decade. I've been "at it" for over two. While it's never happened to me, I've seen it happen plenty. I've also seen it happen to guys in BL/yuri circles. I can assure you, knowing all participants personally, that some of these men/women involved in ridiculing someone on the basis of their gender and trying to drive them out were damn near thirty.)
