Pretty sure a lot of people do this. Unless it specifically comes up I just don't care mentioning it, specifically mentioning it just draws attention to it and makes you seem like you're looking for special treatment or something.

Especially in male-oriented places like MMOs, oh lord.

It wouldn't feel right to me to hide my gender. Of course here on LJ I feel that people really dun curr and the other places I go either are the same way or don't have usernames but if I were on a male dominated forum I wouldn't want to hide who I was, though I wouldn't mention it unless brought up.

Of course your way is probably more productive, OP. If I got shit for being a girl somewhere, I'd get mad and there would be a piss fest.

I'm not really into "male-dominated" games and stuff tho, so it never comes up. The biggest thing I'm into that's mostly guys is an irl-mainly thing, the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game. And the vast majority of people I've met don't seem to care that I'm a girl duelist, even though I'm usually the only girl in a tournament of 30+ people. The ones who do care are usually like, in middle school. (One slightly older guy did say he didn't want to be beat by a girl; I told him he was being sexist and he argued and whined; then I kicked his ass. That was fun. x3)

It does bother me though when people call my Fortune Ladies (see icon) "he" during a duel even though they're just cards

Ahahaha when I used to run a website I used to be gender-neutral, even in my site updates. New members always assumed I was male, and whenever they found out I was female from another staff member they were like "[Admin] is a girl?!OH MY GOD I DID NOT KNOW THIS."

It always made me smile when they said "[Admin] is a pretty cool guy/bro/dude." Truthfully, I like being gender-neutral in big forums, because I just feel more comfortable.

yeah, but places like that don't make me feel comfortable for the longterm...it's fun when I'm obsessed by the thing, but that's it. my favorite forum friends (where I've been active for years) are the ones where it's clear and OK that I'm a girl.
it's also very weird to be called "he" on the internet, though...I like it, and my feminist self does not like that I like it one bit....

On a forum I use I have a username that is a deliberate misspelling of my real name and I swear I think it's obviously female and yet I get called him/he all the time by new users. One even said it was because I had a comic book avatar and talk about films...as though no woman has ever done that :\

You know, I frequent a certain male-dominated anonymous image board and I usually pretend to be a guy over there, because most users don't respond kindly to women, but I've mentioned I was a girl a few times and I got a surprisingly positive response. I still like the possibility of being gender neutral that the internet provides though.
