Sometimes I feel like I have to mention my gender just to prove their "girls can't be into this" theory wrong.

I think this is better than hiding. The reason guys have this assumption about women is because they don't see it very often or ever. After awhile you think that they don't exist. If you were on a forum for years and all you ever saw were guys and no one pipped up and said they were actually a girl, then you would start to believe that girls just aren't interested in that subject. From my experience, guys don't really care if you're a girl as long as you've got something constructive to say on the matter. If they're on their guard it's probably because a few girls have been the cause of some drama in the past because they were seeking attention and it's not unheard of either. You've just got to prove that you know what you're talking about and are genuinely interested in the subject.

Eh, I still put blame on guys for making the assumption in the first place than women who don't want to be singled out.

You've just got to prove that you know what you're talking about and are genuinely interested in the subject.

Yeah, I don't think that's fair. Some people will know more about whatever based on their level of interest and how long they've been doing whatever it is. If it's a guy that doesn't know a lot you get "lol noob", if it's a girl that doesn't know a lot you get "dumb attention whore, i told you girls weren't really into it."

The same is said for things that are have been labelled as things mostly women are in too. There are lots of places that have the majority of female posters (for me it's anything to do with crafting hobbies) and it's assumed that the posters there are female because there are very few male posters. The posters that are male aren't singled out if they're genuinely interested in the subject and aren't just there to hit on women. It works both ways. assumption anyways.

It works both ways. assumption anyways.

Yes indeed it does. I've seen a number of men use feminine usernames or allow people to assume they're women in female-dominated spaces, such as slash fandom. Or as you said, craft hobbies. I don't blame them. Sometimes women in female-dominated spaces can be downright vicious.

But how does this in any way negate or invalidate the experiences and desires of women in male-dominated spaces who go the opposite route? Bullying is not a zero sum game. Where did anyone say that this was a one-sided affair? It isn't. But we're talking about what the OP was talking about; which was in particular a male-dominated space.

Or are those men who allow women to assume they're female in craft hobbies or LJ RPs also "fucking stupid" and "putting themselves on a pedestal"?
