I haven't really noticed them on DA but I did make a new fandom friend on Tumblr, only to find that she had some really blatantly racist opinions and reblogged racist stuff. After the first time I called her out on it with no response, I unfollowed. Easy as that. Don't let it deter you from having fun, OP. There are plenty of decent people on the Interweb, in fandom.

It really shocked me that someone could be like that in this day and age, though... and just be completely open about it, no shame at all.

It doesn't surprise me, sadly enough. It just makes me sad that even my oldest relatives are more likely to be awesomely more progressive than the "younger" generations. And I do mean awesomely progressive in their opinions, supportive and understand of QUILTBAG even though their in their 80s.
