look guys, sure there probably aren't as many racists and neo-nazis on deviantart as op thinks but look at this, OP. if you do make an account, these are the faces of your peers. these are the people to whom you will be submitting your hard work for their opinions and evaluations

visualize the galleries full of traced anime drawings that the "artists" refer to as their "OCs" in pictures they refer to as "art" on the account of the fact that they colored the hair differently and changed sakura's name to "bella nova darkstar"

There are pockets of racists and neo-nazis in every corner of the internet. Huge sites like devART are pretty much guaranteed to have some. Browse dA for the pretty things, enjoy fandom elsewhere.

Fandom in deviantArt is well.... let's just say it's better to know fans outside of DA and visit their pages.

Also, they are experiencing a blow up on people calling out a couple of redface (cultural appropriation of Native Americans/Aboriginals) pictures that were made as deviations.

As far as I can tell, most of the Neo-Nazis on dA look down their noses at fandom and go out of their way to avoid it. Not sure about the general racists, though.

Just stay out of the main forums. As far as I know, the neo-nazis turned them into their non-anon /b/ forums. I dunno how it is fandom-specific spaces since I ran away screaming from DA like four years ago.

I pretty much just blot them from my mind, because some of the stuff they say is just so deeply troubling I can't actually believe there are people like that in existence. I may look once in a while out of grim interest, but for the most part, I prefer to keep my distance

I guess it really depends on where you're going on dA. If you're just there for some things, like... Disney princesses (stupid example, I know), you might never meet them.

Yeah, it's really... disturbing. But to be honest, there are two groups of neo-nazis. Some who are really really serious about that, probably older deviants (I use probably because yes, some younger fans can be "real" neo-nazis as well) and some who are just "geez, there are too many foreign people living in my street!".
They say they're proud nazis because they want those people to move out or because they hate communists. Seriously. Some people just think "oh, nazism is the opposite of communism, right?" and think it's cool.

Most people are just... pathetic losers. It's easy to ignore or report them. And then there are those hard-core types. Those who will come back with a new account.

They're easy to ignore... and aren't in every fandom ever. But to people saying "they're all over the internet" -- they do seem to be more prevalent and active (and tolerated) on DA than other parts of the internet.

I haven't really noticed them on DA but I did make a new fandom friend on Tumblr, only to find that she had some really blatantly racist opinions and reblogged racist stuff. After the first time I called her out on it with no response, I unfollowed. Easy as that. Don't let it deter you from having fun, OP. There are plenty of decent people on the Interweb, in fandom.

It really shocked me that someone could be like that in this day and age, though... and just be completely open about it, no shame at all.

lol i used to be active on dA around 2007-2008ish and the place was CRAWLING with those fuckers, especially on the complaints forum. i remember when a bunch of them got banned and then they started their own little forum in ~protest. idr what happened after that. good times, good times lol.
