Somebody's been spamming the submissions post with old secrets, apparently (for what actual purpose, I'm not sure). Just give me a heads up and I'll take the repeats down.

Yeah, this a little... I mean, Those two poses don't really take much "flexibility" at all... Now if there are other poses that people use to claim that, that I'm just really remembering, maybe he's flexible? But if people are claiming that he's ~super ~flexible based on those two images...

>_>;

(Anonymous) 2011-11-01 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Well, the parkour Sherlock does would require an above-average level of flexibility. And the actor is rather flexible himself, as proved in Frankenstein.

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2011-11-01 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't seen Frankenstein... I wish I could, but I haven't had the chance. ^^;;

True, and like I said, if there are other times when Sherlock is super flexible, that's cool- I just can't remember them off the top of my head, lol. But, yeah, using these two instances to ~prove~ he has above-average flexibility would be frusterating. Maybe the parkour (though I know some people who do parkour who aren't as flexible as Sherlock fics tend to make Sherlock) would prove he's a bit more flexible, but not the same I've seen.

If any of that makes sense, I mean. >_>;;

AYRT

I do agree that those specific two pictures are a rather bizarre choice considering the others available, and that fics seem to have Sherlock as some kind of hyper-mobile contortionist at times. It's still not a leap to have him being more flexible than most, though. The guy jumps down from a balcony to the floor below, that's strength and flexibility and all sorts. I can't even hop a fence.

Oh, and the fight scene in TBB, he's lunging and flopping about to avoid the sword.

In short, agree that those specific pictures are a very strange example, but he is still quite flexible.

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2011-11-01 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
Your logic is sound, and I agree. :D

And stuff like that. ♥

(Anonymous) 2011-11-01 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
Lol, wow. I have practically no flexibility (muscle damage prevents me from bending/stretching my legs and arms very far) but even I can sit in both of those positions. That's....not flexible. o.O

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2011-11-01 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
He doesn't spend the entire show in those positions. He flails around some, especially when he's being strangled, smothered, and/or skewered at with a sword.

[identity profile] nyxelestia.livejournal.com 2011-11-01 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
Heh, I don't mind those, personally, but I've seen fics where Sherlock's sitting like in the, ah *checks secret* blue outline, and it's saying he has a rubber spine or something, which is...weird. I can see where OP is coming from. Totally not sitting exactly like that right now, no, nope, not me...

(Anonymous) 2011-11-01 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
you know fandom. they like to take something and run wild with it. sensible and a bit shy? super-genius with the social skills of canned tuna. don't mention your parents frequently? divorced, dead and abusive. and so on.

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2011-11-01 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Which fics are you reading where he's superflexible? I must have missed them. The fics I've read, his flexibility didn't rate a mention.

Fandom can pull ideas from nowhere and just seem to run with them. Though there were the scenes with Sherlock jumping off the balcony and up the fire escape, so we know he's physically fit at least.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-01 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
No. His body type hints that he might be hypermobile.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-01 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
In those two pictures? No, it really doesn't. I have below average flexibility in my spine and I can still sit in both positions quite comfortably.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-01 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
No. That's not what I'm talking about. I'm not talking about the photos. I'm talking about his body type. He's a very tall, slender man, a body type associated with hypermobility.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-02 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
A girl I trained with was 5' 2 and borderline overweight, but hypermobile in most of her joints.

js it isn't a given that a tall person'll have it

OP Here

(Anonymous) 2011-11-01 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I don't mind that people write him as being flexible. I mind that people have him sitting in positions like those and calling it "flexible". It kind of scares me about those writers' health if they think that constitutes flexible.

[identity profile] alizara.livejournal.com 2011-11-01 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
Fuck anyone who calls you fatphobic. I'm fat and I can get into far more complex positions than those. Thin does not equal flexible, anymore than fat equals inflexible.

[identity profile] pet-lunatic.livejournal.com 2011-11-01 10:33 am (UTC)(link)
I hadn't particularly noticed this in fandom, but I agree with you. I'm not thin or flexible, and I sit both those ways, and in various other positions which probably look uncomfortable, but aren't. Uncomfortable doesn't necessarily equal acrobatic, anyway. In fact, I would tend to think that if a person is flexible the position *wouldn't* look uncomfortable. I've seen yogis twisted around like spaghetti junction while seeming completely at ease.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-01 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Visions of foot worship are dancing through my perverted fanboy mind... That is all.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-01 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't say I remember this as an issue in Sherlock fic, and I've been inhaling fic like some kind of inhaling monster. Or if I've seen it, it never registered as a thing.

Anyway, I agree. Those two pictures in no way demonstrate super flexibility. However it's not a negative proof either, so...as long as someone isn't saying "SHERLOCK HAD HIS KNEES UP ON HIS CHAIR AND THAT MEANS HE CAN PUT HIS FEET BEHIND HIS HEAD" I've no problem if someone wants to fic that as an attribute of his.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-03 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm superflexible, but I never do those insane yoga poses. Never cared to. I spend all my energy bending my fingers backwards, bending my hands so they look wrong, bending my thumbs to my wrist, scratching my ear with my foot, and biting my own toenails. Just because I'm all bendy doesn't mean career at the circus.
