Notes:

Somebody's been spamming the submissions post with old secrets, apparently (for what actual purpose, I'm not sure). Just give me a heads up and I'll take the repeats down.

That's silly, OP. Shakespeare is meant to be reinterpreted and redone over and over - one of the few written works that can survive that. Why compare them when you can judge every interpretation on its own? It might suck, but if it does, it should suck all on its own. :P

As for Denisof and Acker, have you seen "Angel"? Those two have such fabulous chemistry, and neither of them are one-note actors.

(I do love Tate and Tennant though and am quite jealous you got to see their production! LoL.)

Oh, I fully acknowledge it is silly, and Shakespeare's definitely meant to be reinterpreted. Normally, one of the things I love about it. But so many things about the production were just so good. I was basically weeping by the end not because it was sad, but because they were so wonderful and clearly so happy to be doing what they were doing. It was basically the sappiest moment ever.

I've seen them in Angel, and Dollhouse, and various other things... I think Denisof could grow on me (though even when he was badass!Wesley in Angel, I could never let go of the wimpy!Wesley from Buffy, lol), but there's always something... insubstantial about Acker. She's a wonderful actress, but... I don't know. It doesn't click with me. Eventually I hope to get over myself, watch it, and be proven wrong. :)

I think maybe some very awful, pretentious part of me thinks Joss is stupid for tackling the play so close to the Tennant/Tate production, because all he's going to do is invite comparison, but the same could be said for any Shakespeare production at any given time. Honestly, if it were next year, it may not even bother me as much; half of it may be the timing. But I also can't fault Joss at all for picking the play because it's always been my favorite Shakespeare comedy.

The one thing I will say is that Fran Kanz will be far and away better than the Claudio from the Tennant/Tate production. He had the right look (picture a living Ken doll), but I didn't care for the actor. Then again, I never care for Claudio and Hero, so it might not have been entirely his fault. *shrugs*

In case you can't tell, my real problem is that I'm over thinking this entirely.

It's not just Tate/Tennant comparison Whedon should be worried about, Damien Lewis and Sarah Parish are nothing to sneeze at. Benedick and Beatrice have to sparkle

Insubstantial, yes. Her voice? The way we can see the bones in her chest? Compare and contrast to another favorite of Whedon, Alyson Hannigan, who always seems very robust and alive despite being small. And I'm saying this as someone who hated Willow.:)

Claudio is an asshole. Any modern remake of the play has to acknowledge this.
