I find it difficult to accept any Benedick that isn't Damian Lewis.

That was the only Shakespeare Retold I liked!

[identity profile] firecracker-sj.livejournal.com 2011-11-03 03:58 pm (UTC)(link)
This adaptation was really flawless. I loved it.

[identity profile] visiblemarket.livejournal.com 2011-10-31 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, lucky you that got to see the Tennant/Tate version. Some of us didn't get that chance and will have to make do with what we will get.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-31 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
It's coming out on dvd though.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-31 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
holy shit anon are you me? I was seriously about to make this secret almost word for word, esp. after that one from the last batch.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-31 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't gotten a chance to see Tennant and Tate since I live in the states and have no money for travel.

I think I will enjoy the Whedon version though, and even if I end up seeing both and like one version better, so what? I can still like both.

I am capable of liking different things from the same source material, it's really not hard to just like them for different reasons.

OP

(Anonymous) 2011-11-01 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Normally, I'm the same way, but I have weird hang ups about it. Seeing the play was more than just entertainment; it was very emotional because of other circumstances, and also, David and Catherine. As I said elsewhere, crying just because of how wonderful and happy they are. And I do not do that.

I do hope I'll get over myself in time, because as I've said, this is very silly.

[identity profile] replicantangel.livejournal.com 2011-10-31 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
That's silly, OP. Shakespeare is meant to be reinterpreted and redone over and over - one of the few written works that can survive that. Why compare them when you can judge every interpretation on its own? It might suck, but if it does, it should suck all on its own. :P

As for Denisof and Acker, have you seen "Angel"? Those two have such fabulous chemistry, and neither of them are one-note actors.

(I do love Tate and Tennant though and am quite jealous you got to see their production! LoL.)

OP

(Anonymous) 2011-11-01 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I fully acknowledge it is silly, and Shakespeare's definitely meant to be reinterpreted. Normally, one of the things I love about it. But so many things about the production were just so good. I was basically weeping by the end not because it was sad, but because they were so wonderful and clearly so happy to be doing what they were doing. It was basically the sappiest moment ever.

I've seen them in Angel, and Dollhouse, and various other things... I think Denisof could grow on me (though even when he was badass!Wesley in Angel, I could never let go of the wimpy!Wesley from Buffy, lol), but there's always something... insubstantial about Acker. She's a wonderful actress, but... I don't know. It doesn't click with me. Eventually I hope to get over myself, watch it, and be proven wrong. :)

I think maybe some very awful, pretentious part of me thinks Joss is stupid for tackling the play so close to the Tennant/Tate production, because all he's going to do is invite comparison, but the same could be said for any Shakespeare production at any given time. Honestly, if it were next year, it may not even bother me as much; half of it may be the timing. But I also can't fault Joss at all for picking the play because it's always been my favorite Shakespeare comedy.

The one thing I will say is that Fran Kanz will be far and away better than the Claudio from the Tennant/Tate production. He had the right look (picture a living Ken doll), but I didn't care for the actor. Then again, I never care for Claudio and Hero, so it might not have been entirely his fault. *shrugs*

In case you can't tell, my real problem is that I'm over thinking this entirely.

I've heard that the Tate-Tennant Much Ado was AMAZING and I fully plan on watching it when it comes out on DVD, but I will probably also eat up Joss's movie too.

[identity profile] erethesunrises.livejournal.com 2011-11-01 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
This basically ten times over.

[identity profile] miakun.livejournal.com 2011-11-01 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
It's coming out on DVD? OMG, seriously?

The thought of watching Tennant and Tate in this play makes me cringe. I just don't ever want to see it. Denisoff and Acker don't repulse me, but with any Shakespeare play there's a chance you'll get it wrong.

I REALLY REALLY want the DVD of Tate & Tennant (this should be a permanent comedy duo, I swear) doing Much Ado. I'm excited about Joss Whedon's version, but how much I want the play version eclipses the excitement about the film.

[identity profile] philstar22.livejournal.com 2011-11-01 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
For me, it is the earlier version with Emma Thompson and Kenneth Branagh. I will definitely see the Whedon one (haven't seen the Tennant one yet), but the Thompson/Branagh one will always be what I picture when I read the play and will always be the standard.

I recently wrote a college senior thesis that was about different film adaptations of Shakespeare plays (not Much Ado though, but Hamlet, Macbeth, and Taming of the Shrew). So I definitely see where you're coming from of being unable to not compare the two to each other, since that basically was my whole damn thesis. (And the casting of Acker and Denisof in lead rolls made me pause at first too, since I've only ever seen them in supporting/minor roles and am not sure they have enough presence to take the leads but I'm hoping to be suprised by them; though I can't wait to see Fillion as the comic relief!)

I was not lucky enough to see the Tennant and Tate version (but I hear it's coming out DVD and I can't wait) but I can just imagine it was brilliant.

But on the other hand, you can still enjoy Joss Whedon's Much Ado, while still thinking of Tate/Tennant's Much Ado as the superior production. Don't completely disregard Whedon's just yet, you may miss out on something fantastic.

And, as someone who has done a little theatre, trust me when I say that live performances are always a million times better than a recorded performance. You may not have fallen to pieces so if you had only watched the DVD of Tennant/Tate's Much Ado rather than the live performance.

LOL I was wondering when something like this would come up.

As much as I love Tennant & Tate together (and if it comes out on DVD then I will be ALL OVER IT), Joss's work is just magical for me and so I'm far, FAR more excited for his version.

I'm excited for it, but maaaaaaaaaaaaan, I'd give it all up to be able to see a film version of Tate and Tennant, so I feel you.

[identity profile] klashfor.livejournal.com 2011-11-01 10:08 am (UTC)(link)
I've seen gifs of the Tate/Tennant version, is there a pirate film of this anywhere?

[identity profile] cdaae.livejournal.com 2011-11-01 06:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I think Denisof and Acker are generally capable of more range than Tennant or Tate, much as I enjoyed the latter two in Doctor Who.

Don't really have any plans on watching the Whedon version, so I'm just here to gush about the Tennant and Tate version. OMG it was amazing. It was the definite high point of my trip to London over the summer. It was so hilarious and they were -- Tennant especially -- so good on stage, and I went in absolutely sick and feeling horrible and I came out feeling absolutely wonderful. If I could watch it again live, I would in a heartbeat.

I am just so very over Mr. Whedon. Eh.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-05 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
It's Shakespeare. There is endless room for reiteration. Whether or not this upcoming one is any good, there will never be one single definitive "Much Ado," and thank goodness for that.
