Notes:

Somebody's been spamming the submissions post with old secrets, apparently (for what actual purpose, I'm not sure). Just give me a heads up and I'll take the repeats down.

I recently wrote a college senior thesis that was about different film adaptations of Shakespeare plays (not Much Ado though, but Hamlet, Macbeth, and Taming of the Shrew). So I definitely see where you're coming from of being unable to not compare the two to each other, since that basically was my whole damn thesis. (And the casting of Acker and Denisof in lead rolls made me pause at first too, since I've only ever seen them in supporting/minor roles and am not sure they have enough presence to take the leads but I'm hoping to be suprised by them; though I can't wait to see Fillion as the comic relief!)

I was not lucky enough to see the Tennant and Tate version (but I hear it's coming out DVD and I can't wait) but I can just imagine it was brilliant.

But on the other hand, you can still enjoy Joss Whedon's Much Ado, while still thinking of Tate/Tennant's Much Ado as the superior production. Don't completely disregard Whedon's just yet, you may miss out on something fantastic.

And, as someone who has done a little theatre, trust me when I say that live performances are always a million times better than a recorded performance. You may not have fallen to pieces so if you had only watched the DVD of Tennant/Tate's Much Ado rather than the live performance.
