For me, it is the earlier version with Emma Thompson and Kenneth Branagh. I will definitely see the Whedon one (haven't seen the Tennant one yet), but the Thompson/Branagh one will always be what I picture when I read the play and will always be the standard.

The Thompson/Branagh one was my favourite, and I was like :3 when I found out they were married irl........until I later found out they divorced because he had an affair with Helena Bonham Carter (of all people :|)

But the movie was so cute and fun and just an overall joy to watch. Loved the time period setting too.

The time period certainly helps. I'm not a huge fan of modernized Shakespeare, especially when the play dialogue is used in the more recent setting. It just comes across as pretentious and annoying and really fake. I can't really tell exactly with Whedon's version. It looks like it will be more modern, but it is Whedon, so of course I'll give it a try.

Ha. I think that was the only role I ever actually liked him in. His same old flat lack of skill actually worked for the part, and it was nice to see him as a villain for a change.

I just really remember so vividly that scene where he's randomly getting oiled up in a massage and then when there's a point to have an evil laugh... there's such a long pause before he cackles that it just was so horribly done that I couldn't stop laughing.

Me too. Emma Thompson will always be the perfect Beatrice. I'm sure Joss Whedon's will be good, but it will never top this version for me.
