Peace Corps (http://www.peacecorps.gov/)

(Anonymous) 2011-11-02 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Dropping links to a secret like this is kind of obnoxious, js. Like replying to a secret where the OP says they want to be a space marine in Halo with "lol join the military then."

(Anonymous) 2011-11-02 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
"I want to save the world" "become a cop"
"I want to be Phoenix Wright" "go to law school"
ext_81845: penelope, my art/character (driving lessons)

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2011-11-02 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
But Peace Corps is pretty much the closest thing we have to Starfleet. I don't see how it's annoying? Seems like the same kind of person who would want to join Starfleet if it existed would be apt to join something like the Peace Corps...

IT'S NOT MY FAULT OUR SOULS ARE WEIGHED DOWN BY GRAVITY OP

(Anonymous) 2011-11-03 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
For one it assumes OP is stupid enough to not have looked for something similar, and two "the closest thing" can still be miles and miles away

"I want to be a mecha pilot."
"Go to flight school."

Not the same at all

peace corps is not fun, adventure, exploring new frontiers everyday and only having to work 30 minutes at a time whenever you feel like it

The closest thing we have to Starfleet is being an actor and playing a Starfleet officer on film. JS

Though it may be the closest thing overall. OP wanted Starfleet Academy so I would suggest Annapolis probably about as competitive as it would be to get into Starfleet Academy and the closest thing to the training.

It's actually one thing I dislike about trekkers saying they want to go into Starfleet. It's the Navy... in space. Okay maybe they're more like the Coast Guard, but I digress they would have to deal with the rigid militaristic structures and if they were skilled, and had connections they may one day be the Captain of the USS Enterprise.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-02 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, it's the closest that op can get to what they want. It's not obnoxious to try to show someone realistic options that might very well make them happy.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-02 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
"Harvest Moon is so fun" "start a farm"

(Anonymous) 2011-11-02 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
"I want to be this shounen manga character and everything he stands for" "join a sports team"

Yeah, I have to agree with this. Starfleet =/= Peace Corps. Their goals may be similar, but I'm guessing part of the appeal of StarFleet is the fact you get to space travel and discover new things. Peace Corps... not so much.

[identity profile] stella-down.livejournal.com 2011-11-03 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
the secret says "I have no idea what I want to do with my life" and then mentions wanting to join Starfleet. I posted a link to a similar organization that actually exists and might be something for the OP to think about.

anything else that you anonymous people are reading into this is entirely in your own heads. I'm assuming nothing about the OP and have no secret dickish intent. jfc I really wonder about F!S sometimes.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-03 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
the OP would probably like to ummm get paid a living wage - or any wage at all - for his/her life's work. so no, just joining the peace corps is not the same OR similar to a career in a space program.

i had no idea peace corps involved space shenanigans, mind = blown

(Anonymous) 2011-11-03 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
I am loling HARD at the amount of hate you're getting for this. It's like everyone is recoiling from their keyboards and HISSSSSIINNG HOW DARE YOUUUUUU

(Anonymous) 2011-11-03 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
way I see it, nothing wrong with suggesting peace corps as something op might want to look in, but just kind of dropping a link and nothing else just feels sort of dickish

maybe it's just me, tho, idk

wtg assuming OP must be American. And since when did the Peace Corps operate largely in space?

Please explain how the Peace Corps is similar? It's not about exploring new frontiers, nor does it have a military component. Nor does it especially involve advanced and exciting science and/or advanced and exciting technology (of course scientific expertise is useful for some aspects of the Peace Corps, such as the forestry service, but it's usually not cutting-edge).

Just "it's idealistic and is about improving the world!" is not really enough of a similarity to me. In fact the core mission of the Peace Corps directly contradicts the core precept of Starfleet's Prime Directive.

A better recommendation would to say they should explore careers in science that involve the outdoors and exploration, such as geology or xenobiology or astrophysics. Such expertise may also be applicable in a military setting, so they might want to consider a scientific or technological career through the military. Like specializing in hyperbaric medicine with the Navy or better yet, aerospace medicine with the Air Force (this is assuming they are American; other countries often have similar career tracks within their own militaries). This sounds a lot more like a Starfleet-inspired life imho.

[identity profile] stella-down.livejournal.com 2011-11-03 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
it seems apt to me - travel to 'strange' countries, exchange cultural ideas and offer practical assistance in a variety of ways, including scientific shit like IT and medicine. the Peace Corps also has less of a political agenda than the military or even organizations like the CDC, which gives them the (relative) freedom to be altruistic.

and, frankly, since most of the OP's secret was about a lack of ambition and motivation, the Peace Corps is a much more attainable goal than a career in astrophysics or a science track in the military. if all this secret said was "I wish I could join Starfleet IRL," I'd agree with you 100%.

This ... is the craziest subthread I've ever seen on F!S. Either someone out there is really butthurt about you or about Peace Corps. Or about links ... ?
