Dropping links to a secret like this is kind of obnoxious, js. Like replying to a secret where the OP says they want to be a space marine in Halo with "lol join the military then."

(Anonymous) 2011-11-02 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
"I want to save the world" "become a cop"
"I want to be Phoenix Wright" "go to law school"

But Peace Corps is pretty much the closest thing we have to Starfleet. I don't see how it's annoying? Seems like the same kind of person who would want to join Starfleet if it existed would be apt to join something like the Peace Corps...

IT'S NOT MY FAULT OUR SOULS ARE WEIGHED DOWN BY GRAVITY OP

(Anonymous) 2011-11-03 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
For one it assumes OP is stupid enough to not have looked for something similar, and two "the closest thing" can still be miles and miles away

"I want to be a mecha pilot."
"Go to flight school."

Not the same at all

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2011-11-03 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
Well it's better than agonizing over not being able to do shit that is impossible

Enjoy being depressed instead I guess

[identity profile] tsururu.livejournal.com 2011-11-03 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
peace corps is not fun, adventure, exploring new frontiers everyday and only having to work 30 minutes at a time whenever you feel like it

(Anonymous) 2011-11-03 12:12 am (UTC)(link)

okay but if you think Starfleet would be mindless fun and adventure then you are dumb.

[identity profile] tsururu.livejournal.com 2011-11-03 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
as long as I'm not as dumb as thinking being in peace corps would give someone the same experience as being in starfleet, I'll take it

[identity profile] cold-river-blue.livejournal.com 2011-11-03 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
Also (and I'm just spit-balling here), no space ships.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-03 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
The closest thing we have to Starfleet is being an actor and playing a Starfleet officer on film. JS

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2011-11-03 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah fuck all that helping people shit

So boring

[identity profile] onnanifujiyuu.livejournal.com 2011-11-03 05:19 am (UTC)(link)
Though it may be the closest thing overall. OP wanted Starfleet Academy so I would suggest Annapolis probably about as competitive as it would be to get into Starfleet Academy and the closest thing to the training.

It's actually one thing I dislike about trekkers saying they want to go into Starfleet. It's the Navy... in space. Okay maybe they're more like the Coast Guard, but I digress they would have to deal with the rigid militaristic structures and if they were skilled, and had connections they may one day be the Captain of the USS Enterprise.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-02 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, it's the closest that op can get to what they want. It's not obnoxious to try to show someone realistic options that might very well make them happy.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-02 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
"Harvest Moon is so fun" "start a farm"

(Anonymous) 2011-11-02 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
"I want to be this shounen manga character and everything he stands for" "join a sports team"

(Anonymous) 2011-11-03 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
"i wish i could fly" "expedia.com"

(Anonymous) 2011-11-02 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I have to agree with this. Starfleet =/= Peace Corps. Their goals may be similar, but I'm guessing part of the appeal of StarFleet is the fact you get to space travel and discover new things. Peace Corps... not so much.

[identity profile] stella-down.livejournal.com 2011-11-03 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
the secret says "I have no idea what I want to do with my life" and then mentions wanting to join Starfleet. I posted a link to a similar organization that actually exists and might be something for the OP to think about.

anything else that you anonymous people are reading into this is entirely in your own heads. I'm assuming nothing about the OP and have no secret dickish intent. jfc I really wonder about F!S sometimes.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-03 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
the OP would probably like to ummm get paid a living wage - or any wage at all - for his/her life's work. so no, just joining the peace corps is not the same OR similar to a career in a space program.

[identity profile] stella-down.livejournal.com 2011-11-03 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
you are reading way too much into this secret. it is four lines long. we know absolutely nothing else about the OP.
ext_81845: penelope, my art/character (Default)

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2011-11-03 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
for his/her life's work

What.

The vast majority of people who join Peace Corps do it for experience and to help people, then put that experience on a resumé when applying for jobs later (and yes it does look good on a resumé, especially if you are looking to get a public sector job like teaching). Very few people do it long-term.

Also there are no fucking jobs right now so having something to do is good even if you don't get paid. It's better than living with your parents and fucking around on the internet all day.

[identity profile] elica.livejournal.com 2011-11-03 05:33 am (UTC)(link)
You're assuming one thing about the OP, that he's or she's in the US. :)

(Anonymous) 2011-11-03 10:10 am (UTC)(link)
i had no idea peace corps involved space shenanigans, mind = blown
