Yeah you should totally just level with her. If you don't flex your own creative muscles they will atrophy. Just say you need to take some time off of beta-ing and stuff and work on your own pursuits. If she can't understand that then maybe she's not worth your time.

Yeah, just tell her, OP! Some people either don't notice or think they're just imagining things if they suspect anything, unless you tell them outright.

Of course, I'm giving your friend the benefit of the doubt, since she could very well be doing it on purpose. (I hope she's not! That would suck.)

(Anonymous) 2011-11-04 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe she isn't doing it on purpose and talking with her telling you don't have much time/want to focus on writing you own stuff would be better than just venting on a secret.

Tell your friend you've been having problems focusing on your work and ask if they'd mind if they took a break from betaing. Then make an announcement on your LJ saying you're taking a break from reading other people's fics because you're finding yourself distracted from working on your own and you hope everyone understands and won't mind that you're not commenting on their newest work. That way it won't feel like you're singling out this one friend - if you're worried how they might take it, that could soften the blow.

It's much more likely to be obliviousness than maliciousness, OP. Just talk to her honestly about how you feel like she's dominating your conversations and you never get to talk about your stuff anymore. I bet you anything that if you're polite about it and don't accuse her of doing it on purpose, she'll be receptive to ideas for how to make it more fair.

As a slash fan, I feel for you. I can't speak for every fandom, but most of my main fandoms are very, very, very slash friendly. I find myself very grateful that I'm so into slash 'cause I often wonder if I'd enjoy fandom so much if I was mainly interested in Het and/or Femmeslash, which seems to be the minority of a lot my maindoms.

And I can't speak for every fandom, as I said, but... well, I've seen A LOT of amazing fanwork done by slashers, and I often wonder if things were the same on the Het/Femmeslash side of things. I would think so, but then, I'm not very into Het/Femmeslash at all (have a few het pairings that I adore, but they're a rare thing).

In my limited experience, I think that if you find more high quality fanart of a certain category, it's because there is simply more people shipping that and producing so much of that artwork. I might very well be wrong, but I'm convinced that it's a matter of sheer numbers.

[identity profile] lashiec.livejournal.com 2011-11-04 05:45 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed with the anon above, I think it's just a sheer numbers thing. Slash dominates a considerable number of fandoms, at least from what I've seen.
