I felt like this a lot when I was in the SPN fandom. I actually went through a period where I pretended to love a particular slash pairing just so I didn't seem so much like a sore thumb.

[identity profile] inboots.livejournal.com 2011-11-04 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
depends on the source material (slashers don't have that much fun in fandoms like doctor who or the vampire diaries, or the now defunct btvs/bsg), but yeah, it probably would be.

slash driven fandoms tend to be more organized and produce better fanwork imo.

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2011-11-04 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
IA. I mean, everyone else is like "~*~*~*~*~X AND Y ARE IN TWU LOVE~*~*~*~*~" and I'm over here like "oh. I thought that X and Z were in a relationship...?" >_>

I mean, I can't even see it with Sherlock/Watson (any incarnation), really any character (including Spock/Kirk) in the new Star Trek movie (haven't watched the series tbh), Merlin/Arthur, Phoenix Wright/Edgeworth or anything... >_>;;

On another note, whenever I hear the term "slash goggles", these are what I picture. ^^;

*Comedic effect intended, no offence meant.

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2011-11-04 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
And that image turned out way bigger than in the preview... Muggle trucker. >:I

[identity profile] jedi-pineapple.livejournal.com 2011-11-04 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Insano? Because that's my first thought.

And agreed. While I can ship a few slash pairings (I have no trouble with Holmes/Watson and Kirk/McCoy) I'm apparently not enough of a slash fan. I just ship people I think are compatible and would be cute together.

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2011-11-04 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Yep~ :D

I just feel really guilty slashing people if/when they already are in canon relatinoships... ^_^;;

[identity profile] jedi-pineapple.livejournal.com 2011-11-04 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
Me, too. The only way I ship Holmes/Watson is before Mary or after her death.

(no subject)

Psh for Phoenix/Edgeworth, Edgeworth/Maya's where it's at!

*what I got from your comment, sorry*

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2011-11-04 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
For me it's Edgeworth/Franziska because I can't think that von Karma would actually treat them like siblings, not really, and because I have a real fondness for couples where both of them have a shared traumatic experience, and help each other heal while both grow as people.

But, I can also see how that would squick some people, and I have read some lovely Edgeworth/Maya fic in the past, so I don't mind too much. :3

(Anonymous) 2011-11-04 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
I'm with you on that. It takes a lot for me to actually legit ship slash pairings. I have a few crack pairings that are m/m but that's all. I usually prefer my guy characters as friends or rivals than lovers.

Sometimes I wish more people had femslash goggles like I do. Because GL is sorely lacking in my fandoms.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-04 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
I sympathize, anon. I'm not a m/m slash fan myself but I'm a your-ship-is-not-my-ship-and-that's-okay person, and most of my fandoms are anime that tend to have large, pretty male casts. Everyone else slashes them up and down, the popular, heavily recommended fics are slashy, and I'm just off in the quiet corner with my het/femmeslash ships.

You've just got to look for fandoms that fit. Many are completely the opposite.

[identity profile] megalomaniageek.livejournal.com 2011-11-04 05:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm the same way. I don't know if I can find fandoms that fits, though, because I can only get into a fandom when I'm really wrapped up in the source material, and I mostly like anime.

[identity profile] rosehiptea.livejournal.com 2011-11-04 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
I can sympathize. I enjoy reading slash fic (and writing it too) but I don't see slash everywhere and get excited about it, and it would be more fun if I did. And there are a bunch of extremely popular slash pairings I don't really ship.

There are slash pairings I love but they're often stuff not that many other people like, like Spike and Jet from Cowboy Bebop or Shawn and Gus from Psych. (Which has a lot of slash but not that pairing.)

Then again I do see femslash easily, which is kind of fun.

/tl;dr

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2011-11-04 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
You know, thinking about it, IA about the seeing femslash angle... Though it usually isn't with people who have canon relationships. >_>

(I mean, I can't really slash Kida from Atlantis: The Lost Empire with Audrey, Kida is with Milo. But I can totally slash Audrey with Helga, since they're both single... Hm...) >_>

[identity profile] streetcake.livejournal.com 2011-11-04 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
Nooo, you need to be the beacon of hope to other fans who don't have slash goggles!

(Anonymous) 2011-11-04 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Tbh I love slash glasses because I know that if I see slashy chemistry in a somewhat popular movie I'd know there would be slash and my horrible after movie blue balls would be sated.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-04 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Awww, sorry anon, I know it can suck to be in a fandom and not see the chemistry that everyone else seems to see between the most popular pairings, whether they're slash, het or femslash. But keep on doing your thing, enjoying fandom your way, and you'll eventually find like-minded people.

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2011-11-04 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
Sadly, it probably would. When the majority of fandom is having massive amounts of fun in a corner and no matter how you try, you just can't get into it, it reeks.

Nothing to do for it, except to embrace the part of fandom you do enjoy harder.

[identity profile] 131-di.livejournal.com 2011-11-04 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
yeahhhh it's the way it works and it kind of blows.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-04 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
It's probably right up there with having a het OTP in a fandom that is ALL THE SLASH.

[identity profile] bandnerd88.livejournal.com 2011-11-04 03:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I think my slash goggles got, like, lost in the mail or something. Maybe I just misplaced them...?

idk, I just can't get into slash. *shrugs* Oh well.

(My current fandom doesn't have all that much in the way of slash anyway so it's not a huge deal right now, but it's never much fun when I'm in fandoms where people are like "SHIP ALL THE BOYS" and I'm like, "...b-but....")

[identity profile] megalomaniageek.livejournal.com 2011-11-04 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I completely agree anon. I've even tried to force myself to enjoy super-popular pairings I don't really like because everybody else seems to and I want to belong. I've had some success but my heart really just isn't in it.

Also thank you for not making a whiny and passive-aggressive "het shippers are the most oppressed" secret that would turn into a huge pro-slash vs anti-slash wank. The secret and the entire thread it spawned has been pretty reasonable and non-judgmental.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-05 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
Same! I remember when I was a pre-teen and first read the Sherlock Holmes canon. It was before the internet and I had no clue slash even existed. It didn't even cross my mind Sherlock and Watson could be a pairing. I never read "between the lines" or anything like that. Imagine my surprise when I, as a teenager, stumbled upon those first Holmes/Watson fanfics online. What an eyeopener LOL.

Nowadays when I watch movies/tv series, I recognize potential m/m pairings because of fandom's influence on me but it's more like "I can see how this slash pairing could become very popular soon", than "OMG, I SHIP IT LIKE BURNING".
