Except the Doctor doesn't want to fight for Amy, and the whole point is for Amy to realize she wants Rory.

After several Doctor/romance with a companion seasons I found it refreshing for the Doctor to not be matched up for a short while.

I can get with you on the Doctor fighting for romance though, I'm getting tired of women falling for him before he even gives them a second glance. I understand that he's the Doctor and it's easy, but it'd be fun to have him completely fall for someone who hardly gives him the time of day.

That was a really, really short while, because River quickly showed up with her THIS BOOK SAYS WE'RE GOING TO HAVE AN EPIC LOVE STORY, SO YEAH. GET TO IT.

I was able to live in denial for River for a while, because it at first was just very flirty and the Doctor can flirt and have nothing come of it.

Then... the wedding... well... let's just say I'd rather River not come back.

Moffat already ripped out my heart and stomped on it with her character arc. I don't need him to set it on fire and dance around it too.

Yeah I am definitely in a "Moffat, please move on" phase right now. I am hoping we get a new companion and new plot line, I know Amy and Rory are supposed to be back but no one seems sure in what capacity. I think the Ponds (very much including Melody/River) are pretty much done and we could use some new adventures with Eleven.

Unfortunately, I fear River will become the new Rose. In fact, I think she already has.

She absolutely has. It's insane how her fans still claim that she's better than Rose. No she's not, it's just that you have a boner for her.

I'm a fan of River and I wanna rip out my hair when I think about her character now. She's 10x worse than Rose ever was IMO. And that's owing to the fact that I don't even think the Doctor likes her all that much. Ten loving Rose made her returning OK with me. Every time I see River pop up and watch her character get butchered some more, I wanna scream.

That has been my fear too, and I tried to deny it because I didn't think Moffat would do it considering how he felt about Rose, but I think Moffat is actually more attached to River then RTD was to Rose.

I think we just need a law that head writers are not allowed to make one companion more important then all the others.

RTD wasn't actually as attached to Rose as it might seem. In The Writer's Tale there's a lot of planning for this sassy redhaired character, Penny, who would be the perfect match for the Doctor and he'd fall for her ten times as hard as he did for Rose.

Penny never happened and all her storylines (except for from the romance plot) were given to Donna.

Do you have page numbers, by any chance? I only skimmed the Writer's Tale and completely missed Penny. I'm interested, though, and I'd like to go back and read what he wrote about her.

I'm a huge Rose fan, and I get very annoyed with all of the Rose bashing. I don't like River very much, both because of some things about who she is in and of herself, and because I'm not thrilled about Rose being replaced. I kind of want the story to just move on from River already. But that's the exact same thing a lot of people say about one of my favorite characters, and it gets very irritating, so I mostly keep quiet about it. If I say something critical of River, I try to keep myself in check and not get too obnoxious.

Just realized that this could be read as me accusing you of being a crazy River basher or something. It was not intended that way. :)

I'm a fan of both Rose and River. I hate when people "bash" either of them. However, I don't think pointing out the serious flaws in the way they're written counts as bashing. People got sick of seeing Rose but her character was at least consistent. River's character was ruined with time and it's continuing to be ruined. And I'm sad.

Different anon. I think what people consider "bashing" is often coming from fans or former fans of characters. Rose got less favorable in fandom when she started being mentioned and kept coming back, but she was extremely well loved up until the end of Doomsday, that episode crushed most people.

And many people are disappointed in the way River's character arc was handled, it's hard to see a character you like become something you don't like.

I'd rather a character I love leave when the time is appropriate so I can continue to love them, seeing a writer ruin what was once an awesome character can be painful.
