#10... Why in the world would you include an AC character, and ignore AC canon? Oh, I want Kadaj in my fic! ...but not as Kadaj, and not with Yazoo or Loz! Yeah!

Or oh yeah, I want Denzel. Only he's not an orphan, and Tifa doesn't care for him! Right!

If you hated AC, DoC, or any of the others, then just say you're ignoring AC canon. Most of the people in the fandom (that I've seen, at least) seem to accept that. It's not an uncommon thing. This is a fandom that was around ten years, and only recently got additions to it. Obviously, people are used to the older canon, the older ways.

But when you say you're going to use some AC canon and not all, that's just right in that area where you're picking and choosing canon. And that pisses a lot of people off for fairly obvious reasons.

I don't know, I've got a long-running fic that completely ignores Compilation canon, but I stuck the triplets in for a similar purpose to the film except less retarded.

(By that, of course, I mean the film was a steaming turd, not that I'm omgawesome.)

There are several aspects of the canon Compilation has presented that feel are pretty neat, and I don't see why I (and the secret-maker) can't include them to a degree.

Two words: Alternate Universe.

In the fic I was writing, it's placed on the same world, but the timeline's several altered because a couple events ended out differently. The characters are still themselves, but the original cast is closer to original game canon characterisation than they were in AC or DoC, so as soon as AC came out everyone started calling OOC.

And that? That makes me hate the fandom. My fic was placed during the timeframe of the original game, there's really no reason for the characters in it to act like they did in AC. And the SHM didn't even show up until fairly far into the fic, too, and after a few explanations and AU history explanations, they fell into the same roles they have in AC.

But the plot of AC wouldn't have happened yet, and even if the fic were to eventually catch up to that point it wouldn't happen either, because everything's different.

After the eighth or ninth person telling me that I needed to rewatch AC to make sure my fic could match up with its events, I gave up.

is your fic labeled as an AU? do your headers and author's notes correctly reflect where you diverged from canon? if you expect your readers to just 'figure it out' you're out of luck with all really bad fic that does the same thing, thinking they are not AU.

No, it's labeled. Clearly. Numerous times, no less. It doesn't stop people from telling me that THIS can't happen because if it does then THAT won't be able to happen in AC, and it's SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN, even though it's been stated that AC, according to this timeline, will not happen.
