what kind of human characteristics?

OP

(Anonymous) 2011-11-09 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
Well, in the Transformers (G1) fandom, it's mainly things like fanfic authors putting mouths on characters with facemasks and two optics behind a visor... just humanizing the characters a little too much physically. I'm only annoyed because it puts me out of the story. Why can't some members of an alien race have just one eye; why can't what's normal for them not be what's normal for us?

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2011-11-09 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
ah, I see what you mean.

yes, that kind of thing break my immersion too in my fandoms

Re: OP

NA

Haha, tell me about it. Mostly authors need to put a mouth on a character in order to make them suck dick.

[identity profile] fierceawakening.livejournal.com 2011-11-09 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
That said I do hate the whole optics behind the visor thing. I don't know why that even bugs me, but it does. It won't make me OMGHAET a fic or anything, but I just kind of wonder why it's so important that everyone have two eyes except Shockwave and Lugnut.

Re: OP

Now I really want to write Soundwave or First Aid giving someone a nuzzle-job...

>>putting mouths on characters with facemasks

A lot of canon material does that too, though. Optimus Prime and Soundwave, for example, both have mouths behind their masks.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2011-11-09 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
I know Optimus has a mouth in Prime and Animated, but I didn't think he or Soundwave had one in G1. I can't even imagine Soundwave having a face to show emotions with. Please, show me pics/links for proof!*

(BTW, I just chose that pic up there because it was funny/horrifying and from a storybook whose continuity had nothing to do with the cartoon/comics. That smile looks evil.)

*Orion Pax wouldn't count, I don't think? What with the reformatting and all.

no, look at the movie. Optimus had a mouth under there. always did.

Only in the comics, though. If you're writing primarily cartoon-verse G1, you could probably argue against them having mouths. And IIRC Optimus in the Marvel comics has a microphone-looking voice grate behind his facemask; don't remember if Soundwave did.

Of course Starscream also had a weird-ass lizard tongue in the Marvel stuff, so...one step forward and one step back, I suppose.

And then I just totally creeped on your journal and found out you are one of the people responsible for the only reason why I have a tumblr. I love askaseeker, so thank you humblebot!

This video is fucking annoying.
I'm pretty sure OP knows it's okay to not like things and they surely weren't a dick about it. Instead they made a vent secret.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-09 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
that video was not required this time

don't over use things! that's how i learned to hate "haters gonna hate" gifs :(

Transformers canon is rife with bizarrely human characteristics that make no mechanical sense. Like for example, they look and function exactly like human vehicles complete with cabs and controls, and yet presumably they come from another world that has no corresponding humanoid species that would require a cab to sit in, nor do they actually need to be driven.

Honestly, the best thing you can do is say the MST3K mantra: "It's just a show, I really should just relax". Or in this case, a fic.

But yeah, it's not the fic writers problem that you don't like their fic. They aren't in charge of your reading choices.

[identity profile] humblebot.livejournal.com 2011-11-09 02:13 am (UTC)(link)

Uhh, not disagreeing with your main argument, but this specific one is wrong. They have different appearances on their home planet, and when they go to alien worlds they scan local vehicles to imitate them.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-09 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, you're right; and sometimes it's very cool to read about an alien race that's fundamentally different from, yet similar to, our own. What I wrote about in the secret is only really grating in bad!fic. In good fics, I'm more like, " You're a good writer; you don't have to succumb to nonsensical scifi standards!" The all-natural MST3K salve really does apply in those cases!

Although, I wouldn't put the example you presented as an example of how the tfs are portrayed nonsensically in canon. Their vehicle forms resemble earth vehicles because they have the ability to adapt their structure to suit different environments. They disguise themselves as human cars/planes to blend in. They have no reason to do that to their robot forms, though, and that's why it bugs me when someone say, writes that Jazz has two optics underneath his visor. Why can't the visor just be his eye? What's the point of that?

And no, I would never tell a writer they ruined something; they don't deserve that! It's just hard to write constructive criticisms when you have your own biases.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-09 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
I think I get you. I fucking hate it when in fics Transformers sleep in giant human beds or get pregnant and suddenly have mood swings and puke into their robo toilets.

[identity profile] stunt-muppet.livejournal.com 2011-11-09 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
I would just like to point out that, if we were looking at "realistic" alien robots, none of the Transformers would have eyes. Or mouths. Shockwave gets along perfectly well without a mouth or seperate eyes, and they can see in their vehicle modes so their "eyes" aren't visible, ergo they must not need them.

Like what you like and all, but you're kind of fighting a losing battle as far as "nonsensically human characteristics" on a robot go. They're already nonsensically human in the shows themselves.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-09 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
Eh. I've always just assumed that whatever level of human characteristics a TF exhibited depended on their comfort level and their need/want to blend in to an certain extent like their car forms. I.e. I think they can adopt certain characteristics to make the humans around them more comfortable--humans like eye contact so let's have eyes in our robot forms is the reasoning. I mean they aren't going to blend as such as a human but I think they adopt certain traits to make them seem more trustworthy--it's not like body language websites don't exist and don't talk about how to make humans trust each other (and lack of eye contact is generally assumed to be dishonesty, etc.). It is our planet after all, and not theirs.

[identity profile] stunt-muppet.livejournal.com 2011-11-09 04:59 am (UTC)(link)
...but a lot of them still had the two eyes and mouth in the Cybertron flashbacks in G1, never mind series like Animated or Prime. That kind of implies that it's one of their defaults, or an individual choice at least.

[identity profile] netbug009.livejournal.com 2011-11-09 05:56 am (UTC)(link)
PLEASE. STOP IT.

Everybody! Stop assuming because a few 13 year olds on ffn who should learn to be willing to take feedback before posting something on the internet don't want critique means we all don't!

Plenty of us are STARVING for feedback and thoughtful comments! There is plenty of room between being a jerk and being a suck-up that readers CAN and SHOULD utilize to offer critique to writers!

(Anonymous) 2011-11-09 06:15 am (UTC)(link)
Honey, it's Transformers. They are bizarrely and inconsistently human-like in literally every canon, Y/Y?
