This is why I stopped writing Kingdom Hearts fanfic, TBH.

Yep. And the problem is that people use the crazy OOC headcanon as the official fanon personalities. So if you're trying to work off the characterization from the games (e.g. writing a member of the Organization and not hiding the fact that they're a jerk or an egotist or a sociopath) then you get shitloads of comments saying you're writing them OOC and that "[Organization Member] would never act like that, he's a sweet little uke who just wants the love of [fandom-assigned seme]". It's incredible frustrating.

Not to mention, the idiots who berate authors for not writing yaoi couples how they want. I wrote a Saix/Xemnas fic years ago where Xemnas was the bottom, and HOLY SHIT did I get some angry reviews! "Saix is too much of a pussy to top!", "Why the fuck would Xemnas let someone weaker than him top??", "Don't you understand the rules of yaoi?!!", blah blah blah.

Oh God, those reviews are fucked up. And yet totally believable. For some reason, Kingdom Hearts has a disturbingly high number of people who not only believe that their headcanon trumps actual canon, but that they have the right to get angry, verbally harrass and mount campaigns of hatred against anyone who doesn't use the same headcanon. I don't know what it is about the games that makes so many people think that behaviour is acceptable. I mean, it was pretty bad after the first game with Riku/Sora shippers, but when the second one introduced the Organization the fandom went from hard work to unbearable.

I think in part it's because the fandom revolves around a gaming series. I don't want to sound like a gaming snob here, because that's not what I'm trying to say, but the Kingdom Hearts series attracted a lot of people who don't game or who only game casually. It's a great gateway series in that sense. But this meant a lot of the fans didn't get through the whole game - the second one obviously had a supremely easy mode, but the first one had sections that were really hard or just fiddly and required a lot of patience. Some didn't play the games at all, either because they don't like gaming at all or they couldn't justify buying a console just for a game they might like. Now, being in a gaming fandom and not having played the game isn't a crime - that's why play-through videos (or even just cut-scenes vids) are fantastic, you can get the gist of the plot and characterisation without having to buy the game if you don't want to. But I think a lot of Kingdom Hearts fans didn't even watch play-through vids, they just read a few high-profile BNF OOC fics that appealed to their love of yaoi stereotypes and they're taking their characterisation from those fics rather than the source material. That, coupled with the fact that the fandom has a lot of very immature fans (not necessarily young, but definitely immature) who don't seem to understand that stamping their feet and throwing a tantrum doesn't get them their own way, and you have a giant clusterfuck of a fandom, where OOC fanon is The Law.

I kind of wish there was a community here on LJ specifically for IC Kingdom Hearts fic, but those kind of communities are always a disaster waiting to happen. Still, it would nice to be able to find Kingdom Hearts fic that stays true to canon without sifting through mountains of OOC woobie-uke dross. :(

There actually used to be a community for that (kh_recs) but it appears to have died. :( I do, however, find that a really good percentage of the works on kh_drabble are IC, if you're looking for recs. Unfortunately I don't have a comm to rec for longer fics. :/ Wish I did.

Oooh, thanks for the drabble comm rec. I suppose I could try crack_van to see if there are any recs there, but because it's a mixture of different people reccing there I sometimes find myself having "really? You think that fic is reccable?" moments there.

Kingdom Hearts is the fandom that this secret makes the most sense for, honestly. I remember glancing at the fics of a friend who was in the fandom (I never was, just played the first game and watched friends play the second) and being completely confused.

Could be Touhou. 99.5% of characterization is pure fanon and has very little resemblance to the way the girls actually act in the games or even the side stories, which is annoying because there's so little actually in the canon that you'd think the fans could get that much right.
