This is why I stopped writing Kingdom Hearts fanfic, TBH.

Hard to know without reading the fic or knowing the fandom, but just to play devil's advocate...it could be that the stories are OOC.

*is frustrated with the amount of painfully OOC stories in her own fandom*

writing characters based on fanon over canon is writing them wrong. Your fandom is full of idiots. Not that fanon is bad, but if the fandom values the fanon more then there are issues.

[identity profile] justaminuet.livejournal.com 2011-11-09 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Wait, what the hell fandom complains when someone writes character in character?

This anon guesses that maybe, just maybe, you're the one writing OOC fiction.

When I first get into a new series I make a pointed effort not to read anything until I finish my first stories and get a handle on the world and characters. I know some people like established fanon but I think it dilutes a lot of possible creativity and world-expanding people could be doing.

[identity profile] raichu100.livejournal.com 2011-11-09 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
What fandom, if you don't mind my asking?

(Anonymous) 2011-11-09 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Is this about ponies? Because everyone has all these piles of headcanon from the first season that is slowly becoming very wrong and I've noticed a lot of fans are getting upset about it.

The problem is there are sometimes actual problems in defining "fanon" from "canon". I recently wrote a story that I thought was IC, then someone pointed out that one character had something going on I hadn't thought of that was actually supported by canon evidence, multiple times. So, while I thought it was canon, it wasn't.

Maybe that's not your problem, but maybe try stepping back and seeing what is going on?

Though, if it's really obvious fanon that I do not understand because I do not know what fandom you are in, I retract my previous statement, and wish you good luck. <3

(Anonymous) 2011-11-09 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
Are you serious? Wow.
Though uh... I just can't help thinking that maybe you're writing them OOC? Do you have a beta to check?

(Anonymous) 2011-11-09 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Are you positive you're NOT writing OOC, or at least that the fanon is so well-supported by the canon it's almost implied X happened and then you don't include that and people think you missed something big?

I don't think anyone actively goes out hoping they're writing crappy OOC fics but sometimes you just assume you've got it ON LOCK and you're doing it right but you're not :C

Unless this fandom has a really big problem with accusing EVERYTHING that doesn't include their fanon views ??

(Anonymous) 2011-11-09 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
That can be very frustrating, OP. I'm going to play devil's advocate though here as well, and suggest that maybe you're not as IC/canon as you think you are. No smoke without fire, right?

(Anonymous) 2011-11-09 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
I'm always surprised when I find out what is considered to be fanon in my fandoms. I'm all like "wait, what? that's like the virtual opposite of canon? what were you all smoking?"

But then I realized that it's because one author comes up with an innovative take on canon, does it right somehow, and then everyone copies them. And then everyone is SHOCKED when you don't agree.

So, um, yeah...

tl;dr: I agree with your annoyance, op.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-09 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
Now admittedly this does happen and I've seen it, but if you really get these comments all the time, I can't help but think you should get a second opinion. There are people who agree with you, right?

[identity profile] ladyyuna07.livejournal.com 2011-11-09 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
Ha, I just made a vlog concerning something similar, I feel your pain. I'm sorry that my readers forgot that this character isn't Miss Nicey-pants all the time, her character is cold when necessary!

[identity profile] smittenlotus.livejournal.com 2011-11-09 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
Don't feel bad OP. Those are the kind of fans nobody likes anyway. Try not to pay them any attention.

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2011-11-09 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
Er...

...If you're "always" getting complaints for your fics that you "write the characters wrong", I'd suggest asking someone impartial if headcanon is really the issue here. Or, headcanon might indeed be the issue, but in exactly the opposite way you think it is.

[identity profile] streetcake.livejournal.com 2011-11-09 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
I don't see many fics getting called out for not following fanon anymore. Sadly, the actual in-character fics usually just get ignored by everyone else.

Though like some people have suggested, maybe your fics are a bit ooc as well? Or maybe you're writing within a particular circle of people who all share each other's headcanons.

At least you get comments.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-09 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
*As I see their canon personalities

At the end of the day everyone in fandom is putting their own interoperation on a character and not everyone is going to see a character the exact same way. Will there probably be huge overlaps? If the character is well written, yes - but there are still going to be those differences.

[identity profile] eastcoastfilly.livejournal.com 2011-11-09 06:45 am (UTC)(link)
Most of the things I've gotten into, if you follow common fanon, 90% of the cast just doesn't exist and whoever is left just has sex all day.

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with it. Sounds like a grand life. If fans want to write it and other fans like reading it, more power to them. But if they expect every other author to write the exact same thing, they're setting themselves up for disappointment

And I can't believe I just typed a rant like this about fan-written stories. I thought fandom was supposed to be for shit and giggles, when the hell did it get so serious?

[identity profile] firecracker-sj.livejournal.com 2011-11-09 02:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that sucks. All I can say is, keep on writing the characters the way you think they should be written and screw the haters.
