Wait, what the hell fandom complains when someone writes character in character?

Yes. I've seen it happen in every fandom. Some fans are just incapable of paying attention to the show and interpreting from it, even. In SGA, there's this huge conception of John Sheppard that he is just a good-looking, nerd-closeted geek concept and he's misunderstood and he wants the weight of the pressure of his job off his shoulders thus he's a sexual submissive. No, just.....no.

They were shocked, shocked, I tell you, when in The Storm he came up as competent and badass and refused to give up their characterization. No, just no. I just want to ask if we're watching the same show when iirc, in the *first ep* (maybe 2nd ep), he says he's seen a nuclear bomb (I presume a test? show didn't specify--I totally assumed a black ops, bad ass background for him then and The Storm ep was my gleeful payoff to that) go off and he's the only one in the room who has including Weir, McKay, and others.

He's a sexy, laid back, badass, competent man. He's not incompetent even if his sense of direction is lousy when he's on the ground. Rodney is not some masterful, competent dom. The man can't even get a date really......he sexually harasses women, yet he's some kind of sex god in fanon. Makes me barf.

Which is part of why the Sheppard/McKay fanon has always baffled me. I like Atlantis fic, but when it's in character.

Ever been in Gundam Wing fandom? Consider yourself very very lucky if you haven't. It seems to be getting a teeny tiny bit better recently, but for years and years 95% of the fic was based solely on other fic, because 75% of the writers never bothered to watch (more than a handful of episodes) of the show before they wordvomited. It is absolutely baffling even to me, having broken my brain for years trying to understand where everything in this fandom went so wrong, how many people have come out about their complete ignorance of canon in recent years.

I guess it really should have clued me in when one of my former IRL friends, whom I met in GW fandom, would go on and on about her preferred yaoi crackship and who would top and defend it viciously, and then turn around and tell me she hasn't bothered to watch more than two episodes out of fifty like it was the most normal thing in the world.
