It's very simple:

Are their videos shown on MTV and the like? Are they played on the most popular radio stations?

Most people simply won't list to them unless their music is thrown at their face, sometimes literally.

Alright, you steal a case of cds, I'll bring the car, and we'll chuck them out the window into peoples faces!

Sounds like a plan. :D I can see no flaws in it.

MTV shows music videos?

(Anonymous) 2011-11-09 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
Sometimes it does, in my country! VH1 is a goner, but MTV has a little bit of hope yet.

funny in my mine is the opposite O.o

(Anonymous) 2011-11-09 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
This.

If Jin's song is played on the radio and MTV non-stop, his music will sell well regardless of how good it is. I don't think it's a matter of America being racist against Asian singers. It's just that Asian singers tend to have shitty advertising so people don't even know they exist. Hell, the only way I know about mainstream i>American singers is because I listen to the radio on my way home from work.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-09 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. American pop-lovers don't listen to Asian groups because they hate Asians. Asian pop music hasn't become popular because the powers-that-be haven't featured groups on the radio, MTV, etc. Just because [popular American person] was featured on [foreign medium] doesn't mean that all of a sudden people are going to notice that thing if it's not featured in a readily available place (radio, MTV, front page of iTunes (?)).

Why is popular music popular? Because executives say it's popular.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-09 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-09 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
Brilliantly said!

In fact, I'm surprised many Asian singers haven't figured this out yet. Working with a popular singer will not guarantee good sales. The only thing that helps is lost and lots and lots of airtime. You think someone like Katy Perry or Bruno Mars would remain popular if the radio stations stopped playing their music completely? Of course not. People would move on, forget about them, and a new batch of popular singers would replace them.

[identity profile] hopeandmemory.livejournal.com 2011-11-09 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
exactly. if it's not marketed well, no one's even going to know it exists.

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2011-11-09 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
This; a lot of the times I've noticed that Asian artists aren't promoted very well. Like the KPop group Wonder Girls; you can't expect to become famous if you're selling your CD in a cardboard sleeve in a preteen clothing store.

Promotion is super important, and with the absence of the type of music programs that exist in Japan, they really need things like radio stations on board.
