i don't know why people think that american mainstream audiences aren't interested in asian singers when they're really just not interested in asian accents. it's not the same thing.

[identity profile] forthefluff.livejournal.com 2011-11-09 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Then why didn't Hikaru Utada manage to do well on anything but one song on the dance charts? She has an American accent, she was born here. Her record was produced by Timberland, too, and he's turned a lot of pop singers into hits.

I mean, I guess "Like a G-6" was a hit, but...well...why?

(Anonymous) 2011-11-09 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
You couldn't see that they were Asian. People want ~their music~ to be done of people ~like them~, which is why smooth pop-ballads are white guys, hip-hop acts are black guys and Shakira/Ricky Martin are their own style.

It's very simple:

Are their videos shown on MTV and the like? Are they played on the most popular radio stations?

Most people simply won't list to them unless their music is thrown at their face, sometimes literally.

[identity profile] joshua-glass.livejournal.com 2011-11-09 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
Alright, you steal a case of cds, I'll bring the car, and we'll chuck them out the window into peoples faces!

MTV shows music videos?

(Anonymous) 2011-11-09 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
This.

If Jin's song is played on the radio and MTV non-stop, his music will sell well regardless of how good it is. I don't think it's a matter of America being racist against Asian singers. It's just that Asian singers tend to have shitty advertising so people don't even know they exist. Hell, the only way I know about mainstream i>American singers is because I listen to the radio on my way home from work.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-09 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. American pop-lovers don't listen to Asian groups because they hate Asians. Asian pop music hasn't become popular because the powers-that-be haven't featured groups on the radio, MTV, etc. Just because [popular American person] was featured on [foreign medium] doesn't mean that all of a sudden people are going to notice that thing if it's not featured in a readily available place (radio, MTV, front page of iTunes (?)).

Why is popular music popular? Because executives say it's popular.

This; a lot of the times I've noticed that Asian artists aren't promoted very well. Like the KPop group Wonder Girls; you can't expect to become famous if you're selling your CD in a cardboard sleeve in a preteen clothing store.

Promotion is super important, and with the absence of the type of music programs that exist in Japan, they really need things like radio stations on board.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-09 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
Well, Far East Movement made it to the charts for a while. Sure, they're awful, but there's still hope for other Asian singers! Maybe their music just isn't terrible enough (my God, have you seen the shit that makes it on the charts?)

(Anonymous) 2011-11-09 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Well his song is sort of generic....but then, so is most mainstream music. If it gets good radio coverage, I think it will do well enough.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-09 01:10 pm (UTC)(link)
have you heard the whole song? it's not amazing. but it's catchy as fuck. with the right marketing, it'll do fine.

[identity profile] chainsawpants.livejournal.com 2011-11-09 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
My fandom on fandom secrets? weirrrdddddd

how did you guys like the ustream lol

[identity profile] strangetwn-god.livejournal.com 2011-11-09 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
Do people really care about charts since they've been chopped up into so many genres that they're meaningless, and what are the charts tracking anyway? Music television doesn't have room for music anymore. FM's dominated by payola corporate culture. XM has over a hundred channels, including one just for the Grateful Dead of all things.

[identity profile] cherrycoloured.livejournal.com 2011-11-09 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
The sales charts are still pretty relevant. I'd say iTunes are as well, but Asian pop acts have done pretty well on there, especially Korean ones, but I wouldn't say they are mainstream in the West. Album sales still mean something.

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2011-11-09 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's more significant for fans who follow Japanese artists; there the Oricon charts are pretty big. I would argue that it's not as important in the West and in America, but as someone used to following the weekly single charts in Japan, it's kind of weird to try and follow the American charts.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-09 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
The song felt monotonous - I had no desire to sing along with it (unless I wanted to whine "Test Driiiiiiiiiive"), unlike most of the other shitty music that's popular today.

Oh well. It's an amusing effort.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-09 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
I'd sing along to it if I could understand what he was saying. Not because he has a strong accent or anything, but because I hate that fast-taking dance pop that seems to be popular at the moment. IT'S NOT FUN IF I CAN'T SING ALONG TO IT!

You've just summed up the last 30 years of the Australian music industry - "This act will make it big in the US for sure!"

About two a decade do and it's rarely who you think it might be.

[identity profile] badass-tiger.livejournal.com 2011-11-09 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
idk, I'm not American, but Mizz Nina seems to be doing okay. I think you could say the same about a lot of small-town bands too. You want them to do well but they don't because they don't get the right publicity, some Asian bands don't either.

But all in all, I don't see the big deal. Why does Asian music need to be recognised in America anyway? I'm not that into music myself and I know Jin Akanishi. That says enough about his popularity I think.

[identity profile] post-position.livejournal.com 2011-11-09 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
Why does Asian music need to be recognised in America anyway?

Because they have the largest market for music in the world? If one Asian act could make it big, it might pave the way for others.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-10 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
Because only American matters.

[identity profile] demishock.livejournal.com 2011-11-09 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
Prior to just now reading this secret, I had never heard of Jin Akanishi, Jason Derulo, or this song. Upon watching the music video, I have decided I'm not missing much. Which is unfortunate, cuz I was pretty excited for a few minutes there. :(

I love music from all over the world, but if it doesn't click with me, it doesn't click. And neither this guy's voice nor his lyrics click with me. :/

I was actually really surprised that Utada's "This is the One" album didn't do better. I like about half the songs on that, at least (especially "FYI" and "This One"), but I have no idea how it was marketed, and oh man that album cover. Blegh. Bland as hell. Anyway, I only knew she was singing in English because I knew of her Japanese music already. Nobody I know who wasn't already into Japanese music has ever heard of her. /tangent

[identity profile] sashwizzled.livejournal.com 2011-11-09 08:13 am (UTC)(link)
Or it might fail because Jin and Jason are both basic as fuck and the song is like scratching a blackboard with a nail stuck into the end of my penis.

And I don't even have a penis.

However, I will concede that I like the video because the girls and their clothes are pretty and I love every car in it.
