For me, the main problem with Beauty and the Beast isn't the ugly guy/hot girl trope, it's the abusive nature of that particular relationship. It bothers me to see people romanticize their story, and ignore the parts where Beast yelled at her, threatened her, locked her up, and held her father prisoner to get his way, which was to basically force one of the only women who'd come anywhere near his castle since his curse to stay around him so he could attempt to break his curse.

Very, very squicky.

I understand people's reaction to this, but in the Disney film, at least, she's not even attracted to the Beast until he starts getting over his selfishness. It's not as though she's expected to just put up with his abusive behavior--in fact, she does the exact opposite.

Interestingly, in the original stories Beast was just a really nice guy from the get-go. Disney is the one that introduced the idea of him acting as bad as he looked.

idk i read the fairytale and he still kept her in his castle as ransom for her father's life, all because her father stole some roses? he also was pretty emotionally manipulative. i wouldn't describe this as "really nice guy" behavior... more like "Nice Guy".
