Not even a gaming expert, but I have wondered about that one myself.

I love entertaining this idea. Haven't liked any of their games ever since said merger.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-11 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Same here. And the games that I do like (e.g. Kingdom Hearts) end up being butchered to hell with pointless sequels and spin-offs.

Not to mention the complete butchering of FFVII and its plot. Fuck you, Square Enix.

[identity profile] lashiec.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
Never was a fan of VII, but it's undeniable that it got REALLY BAD post-Enix.

This.

You mean like alt history ("what IF the NAZIS won OMG"), only with game developers.

I still wonder what things would have been like without the video game crash, or if Nintendo didn't back out of their deal with Sony.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-11 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
They'd have made more of the same overrated flashy soulless crap they always made and always will make. Blaming Enix for the formula not working anymore must be satisfying for a Square fanboy though.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-11 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
This.

I like some of the old games, but they really are more flash than substance.

I feel sorry for someone who can't acknowledge that many of Squaresoft's games were benchmarks in the gaming industry. Back in the day, they set many trends and created many games that people thought weren't possible at the time. You really think Square (a company not known for making sequels) would have come out with shit like Dirge of Cerberus, Kingdom Hearts Spin-off #394, that Final Fantasy music game, etc. if they didn't merge with Enix (a company well known for bunging out sequels left, right and center)?

At least Squaresoft accepted it when their experiments failed (Spirits Within, Ehrgeiz, The Bouncer, etc) and moved on. Square Enix has a general attitude of "You thought our game sucked? IT MUST HAVE A SEQUEL THEN! AND TWO SPIN-OFF TITLES WHILE WE'RE AT IT! WE WILL MAKE YOU LOVE THESE GAMES!"

[identity profile] stella-down.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
dude, Ehrgeiz was amazing. who didn't want to play as a poorly-rendered Cloud and awkwardly smack Sephiroth around for hours??

FF7 was convoluted and confusing, and required Ultimania to make sense of some parts. They may have made benchmarks, but I preferred other titles over their OMG SO AMAZING FF7 (4 and 8, for example, are my two favorites, while 7 actually ranks low).

Just because they were benchmarks in, you know, animation and the like doesn't mean they had amazing and fluid stories that weren't confusing. In the end, I don't play because a game was a benchmark. I play because the plot actually catches my eye. And I've enjoyed FFXII a bunch more than I ever enjoyed FFVII.

Legend of Mana is not soulless.

[identity profile] stella-down.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
I want to visit an alternate universe where Ted Woolsey had been around to translate FFVII.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-11 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
Was kind of hoping for this to be more interesting before I scrolled far enough to see past the square logo. Like, I've often wondered what the gaming world would be like if Square had never made Final Fantasy 7 -- that game had a much bigger impact on the company and the gaming altogether than just that merger.

[identity profile] donotthrowsouls.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
That would imply that it was a universe where people considered The Spirits Within to be a good movie, since that's how they lost most of their money

I can't even imagine a universe like that

(Anonymous) 2011-11-11 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
I liked that movie. ;_;

What would have happened?

Final Fantasy X would be an entirely confusing plot, just like VIII and VII, with so many twists and turns that you'd require an official guide to tell what was going on. The cultures in the game universes would only be unique when it suited plot. Governments wouldn't really exist with any noticeable differences unless it was necessary to the plot. We'd have yet another silver-haired pretty boy as the villain.

Squaresoft was good for benchmarks in animation and music. But at the end of the day, I don't give enough shits about how pretty it looks and how many choirs you got to sing your songs if the plot won't engage me without leaving me utterly confused.

But hey. That's just my opinion. I like Squaresoft games well enough, but I've been far more engaged in FF12 than any other FF games. Yes, it has its pacing issues and the battle system could use some work, but each location has a different culture independent of plot, the political dynamics that aren't relevant to the plot actually affect things, and just the world was interesting on a whole. I actually want to talk to every NPC I can in FF12. I skipped over most everything in FF7 because it was so confusing and there were so many twists (You weren't actually chasing Sephiroth! Cloud's really an experiment! Hojo is Sephiroth's father! And so on and so forth) I wanted to throw my controller across the room. FF8 was guilty of this, too, with all its time travel shenanigans.

But I guess preferring Enix and its engaging worlds makes me a bad Square fan.

This basically sums up my FF12 experience.

Pending judgement on DQX, I'm happy that the DQ franchise didn't get too mangled with the merger. xD (as your icon reminded me.)
